The Ego Inside Us All
Any Rand’s novella Anthem is relatable to James Hurst’s short story The Scarlet Ibis, given that Equality 7-2125 has similar actions as the older brother in this short story. Both of these male figures worry. Each try changing the idea of a community or a specific person. Such as The Scarlet Ibis showing a perfect example of the older brother ashamed of Doodle because he is not wanting to be made fun of. Equality through similar actions show throughout the novella Anthem his main focus being on ways changing his city and the thought process the council sets for the city’s structure. Throughout the novella Equality begins putting himself first and letting his ego drive him, longing for the power only the council is allowed. Since the main character’s ego starts to become in the way he draws away from the city’s main focus, “[the words cut into marble state] We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever” (19). considering Equality’s childhood he wasn’t allowed to think for himself braking the rules the day the Council of vocations said to Equality “Street Sweeper” (26), soon after equality hurt on the inside but, the outside showed that he is going to be the best street sweeper there is. …show more content…
This fact is shown by all the times the main character breaks the laws and disobeys the council. But for Equality’s situation it was understandable to see why he acted out the ways he did through the novella. Equality has great ideas along with bad timing which turns out to only make him want to strive even more. Even though it was the right time and place for Equality to be focused on his ego, it is not a good idea for everyone on earth to have the same motivation. Then we will not have a true leader and everyone will be in chaos to the point of no social and political structure for the world to be structurally
