Any Old Bag Speech Reflection

Any Old Bag Speech Reflection The “Any Old Bag Speech” was definitely an eye opener for me. This speech opened my eyes to things that I most definitely have to improve on, refine, and learn how to be a good speaker in front of an audience. What I learned from the video was I that I actually love the quality of what I have to say. It is very detailed and tells exactly what I want to say. Furthermore, I was very surprised to see how enthusiastic I was in delivering my speech. I was smiling and even interacting with the audience for additional help with the word “rearview mirror”. This speech most importantly let me know what I need to work on. As I was watching the video I just shook my head and said aloud “OMG Tatyana why did you keep on doing that!?!?”. The thing that irritated me the most as I was watching the video was how much I kept looking down at my objects. The effect of me looking down at my objects was that I lost eye contact with my audience. Another thing that I kept doing throughout my speech was that I kept using filler words such as “like” and “um”. I believe the reason that I continued using filler words in my speech was because as soon as I got up in front of my audience I completely forgot everything that I rehearsed. So throughout the speech I was constantly trying to remember what I had practiced. The things that I need to work on can easily be fixed with more preparation for my speech and going to use my resources here at UNCG such as the Speaking Center. Lastly, my goals for my next speech will be to slow down and pace myself to make sure that I meet the time guidelines. Also, I want to maintain more eye contact with my audience to ensure that I maintain creditability and their attention. Most importantly I want to make sure that I am more prepared for my speech to ensure that I do not use fillers, I do not forget any of my materials, and to have an excellent speech for the

I went the first day, so I don’t have a recording to look at. Even though I cannot see my speech I still realized some of my strengths and weaknesses. Some of my weaknesses consisted of: bad transition words, sounding shaky within the introduction, and time. My strengths consisted of: good movement, good tone, good statistics, and good eye contact. To start off my introduction I was very nervous, and I don’t know for sure, but I think the audience could tell. My transition into my first main point was not the best, but once I was in my first main point I was able to settle and really stroll through the rest of my speech. Within my speech I was able to incorporate many statistics to make my point why horse slaughter is needed although I am still…

The one sub-category of this section that I felt that Javier could’ve executed better was the appearance of being prepare. I’m not trying to say that he did know the material but when he’s presenting a speech in front of the audience and reading his out-line can really make the audience feel like he wasn’t prepare or intersected in the audience at all. After observing this, I decided to give a three in the sub-category of the section because maintaining eye contact with the audience as much as possible let’s the audience know that you appreciate their attend and therefore, keeps the audience interacting. What I recommend is to next time try to not use the out-line so much and only use it to keep you on track and to read off any direct quotes you may have. Try to have an ideal or mental picture in your head of how your out-line looks like so you kind of have memorizes your main points and can talk about them without reading your out-line word for word. Overall, Javier did a outstanding job with the rest of the sub-categories in this section like meeting all of the requirements of the assignment and adapting the speech to fit the audience.…

I think the speech I connected with the most in the opening ceremony was the main speech given by Dr. Marie LePage. It was not the whole speech, just one paragraph. Doctor LePage said that even though she had all this expertise in her field, sometimes she had this doubt that she belonged there with her colleagues, or even that she did not know she was doing. I missed a large portion of the next part of the speech because I was stuck ruminating on this confession of Dr. LePage. I had been struggling with much the same thoughts in my art courses. I am not new to the art world, I have taken many art classes in high school and a lot of after school activities, so I have a healthy understanding for my college level of art, but still, in my art courses I feel like I am faking being good at art or I don’t know what I’m doing.…

I actually did the exact same speech as you. I agree that he does use a lot of fillers like um, and yeah, especially when he was coming up with what he was going to say next. I believe he was one of those kids who doesn't do any work in class and ends up winging it when it comes time. You can see that he didn't think through his speech at all. He doesn't have confidence in what he is saying, which leads to him avoiding eye contact with the audience and ends up with terrible body language. I also agree that his topic didn't help him very much, considering that there is not much to say about the subject.…

I used dread the discomfort that arose from public speaking and avoided every class presentation, which to my frustration, resulted in missing exciting opportunities. During my sophomore year of high school, I chose to take a speech class to embrace speaking opportunities instead of shying away from them. The first few days of class were nerve-racking, but steadily I gained more skill and confidence in my speaking abilities. Towards the close of sophomore year, I stepped into a leadership role, despite my previous anxieties. In a 100-student mock trial, I confidently presented the opening and closing statements for the defense.…

The opinion I had of my presentation before I watched my video was much different from the opinion afterwards. I thought I was nervous, legs shaking, and speaking in a tense tone. However, after watching I realized I was much more relaxed, speaking clear and professionally and that my level of professionalism was much more then I expected. I was able to continuously move around while speaking in a confident manner. Although my introduction was clearly stated in a manor that I believe captured the audience and intrigued them to learn more; I stumbled on a few words rushing through points I would have liked to expand on. Secondly, I believe I was speaking at a fast past and didn’t take the chance to add some delay between topics. I believe this was caused by my nervousness and I used my continuation of words to provide comfort in the opening slides. This bad habit continued throughout my entire presentation. Overall decreasing my level of professionalism. Although these flaws may have occurred, I believe I battled through these nerves and was able to talk in a clear voice. In my opinion, I believe I was able to do this because I knew the ins and outs of my material. I knew my material because I took the time to practice. I believe practice is the key to success. Therefore, I would assess my performance as strong, since it conveyed my topic in an informative and professional way.…

Three specific public speaking goals I want to achieve during the term are; listening speaking and confidence. The goals may prove rewarding for me both professionally and personally because no matter what you do professionally you will always have to listen to somebody either co-workers or clients. You have to actually understand them. Listen to what they have to say, questions they may have listening is very much needed. Now speaking you will always have to talk with others or interact with people in any professional job the way you speak to others is how they will respond to you. And last is confidence, confidence is also needed if your profession is banking you have to have confidence when talking to people. You have to act like it’s your best friend you’re talking to, have confidence in the way you speak. Now personally you need listening either to listen to your kids or family. Speaking is important also if your family is having problems if they come to you, you need to know how to speak to them properly. Research is a key when preparing for a speech. Gather information about the audience that the message will be delivered to, dress code, time limit, and most importantly the topic. If giving a speech the audience expects the speaker to be the subject matter expert. Deliver original information that the audience will not find elsewhere. Take time to gather the information needed for the presentation, and ensure good solid information is delivered and repeat key points that should be remembered by audience to remember. Ensure that to get plenty of rest and water in the days before the speech. Practicing in front of a mirror or video can also help figure where weak points are. Make sure to speak slowly and clear using pauses to relax and build anticipation in the…

Public speaking is an area I feared for several years. My biggest drawback when it comes to public speaking is my lack of confidence. The session helped me realize that it is okay to be nervous, actually it is extremely common. Lacking confidence is something I struggle with regarding leadership as well. I now am aware that confidence can be improved both with public speaking and everyday living. I will take the information I learned about gaining confidence in public speaking and apply it to my…
