Reaction Assignment- Antigone by Sophocles I agree with Creon’s belief than an individual’s true nature can only truly be assessed when that individual is placed in a position of leadership. When someone is put into an important role like that in any society, he either fails or succeeds while doing the job. When one does not meet the expectations of his citizens, he is destined to disappoint them and not receive another term in that role of leadership. If the job was done correctly and the atmosphere was kept intact, the people of that nation would praise his work. The feeling of being loved by everyone in his country makes one believe he is a necessity to his people which also changes

    This quote is very impressive. At this point in the play Antigone has been caught breaking the laws Creon has set forth by burring her own brother. When confronted with these charges she does not deny committing them, nor does she deny her knowledge of these laws. She flat out tells Creon that she is doing what is right and if he begs to differ than he is the fool and not herself. This impresses me because she is having the bravery to say to the king that he is foolish. I relate to this quote because in my own life I’ve had situations where I was confronted by authority figures who felt I was wrong and called me out for it when in fact I knew what I was doing was right. In situations like this I, like Antigone, would call out the true fools and tell them the error of their ways. Sometimes I did prove my point and was forgiven for my actions, other times I was not listened to and therefore condemned for my own “foolishness” for trying to argue an unarguable point.…

    Antigone is the daughter of Oedipus, the king that married his own mother, Locaste and unwittingly killed his father, Laios. When he learned what he had done, he blinded himself and left Thebes, voluntarily went into self-style exile and died over there.     When U2’s Bono sings “women of the future hold the big revelations” (Bono “Get On Your Boots”), he is referencing the rise of women’s roles in Africa in the twenty-first century. Yet, this phrase can also apply to women in other time periods such as in ancient Greece seen in the Sophocles’ play entitled Antigone. In Antigone, the protagonist, Antigone, is a daughter of the house of Lauis, which is a noble, ruling family that has been through much affliction from deaths in the family. When a law forbids Antigone to honor her traitorous (to the state) brother in a proper burial, Antigone disobeys it to honor the gods’ instructions. This act eventually leads to the deaths of Antigone and other main characters.     The third of the three Theban plays, known as Antigone, written by Sophocles is a great tragedy with characters who each have distinct personality traits, morals, and flaws; one being Haemon who possesses many. Haemon, the son of Creon and spouse-to-be to Antigone, has absolute loyalty towards Antigone and the people of Thebes, respect for his father’s decisions initially, and rashness which leads to a shattering ending. Haemon helps protect Antigone by speaking on her behalf to his father, the King, vindicating how “of all women here she’s least deserves the worst of deaths for her most glorious act. When in the slaughter her own brother died, she did not just leave him there unburied, to be ripped apart by carrion dogs or birds. Surely she deserves some golden honour?”(Sophocles ). This shows how he defends the moral basis of Antigone's actions while warning his father that the people of Thebes sympathize with her determination to bury Polyneices. Haemon’s devotion to Antigone is represented as a dog face structure of the mask, showing his faithfulness because dogs exhibit to be extremely loyal to their owners. When Creon asks Haemon whether he still has his full support, Haemon replies “Father, I am yours; with your excellent judgment you lay the right before me, and I shall follow it. No marriage will ever be so valued by me as to override the goodness of your leadership” (Sophocles ). Even though his father, Creon, is going to kill Antigone for her actions, he still respects his decision formerly. Another symbol, to express respect is a handshake icon, with one hand having a crown, on the masks side of the face to show Haemon’s regard for Creon as the king. After a previous antagonistic disagreement with his father, before he kills himself, Haemon spits in his father’s face and “drew his cross-hilted sword and thrust it at [himself]” (Sophocles ).…

    Pride is a powerful emotion, it can lead us to be people we are not, and lead us to be hurt. The act of being prideful comes from the power we are given through society, to say we are something others cannot say they are. Its also what makes everyone who they are, but too much pride can seize control of us causing an uproar of karma to surge our way. In Antigone, the blind prophet, Tiresias warns Creon that, “A corpse for a corpse the price, and flesh for flesh, one of your own begotten.” Furthermore he states, “All men make mistakes, but a good man yields when he knows his course is wrong, and repairs the evil. The only crime is pride.” In Antigone the real crime is to be unjust with your power, just because you have power does not mean you have to use it, so it is shown throughout history, and in our media that certain examples exhibit this behavior. This is the major downfall in their ways, for example: Rome, King Nebuchadnezzar in the Bible, and even in our kids shows certain cartoons exemplify pride, teaching kids that it is wrong such as Sandy in Spongebob. Each character exhibit this prideful quality, in which in turn each has led to their down fall of some kind, and with this unjust power they have been reprimanded in some way. Sure the quote could be retaining to Antigone, Creon, potentially all the characters of the story, though the real audience it is preaching to is all of man-kind. Everyone has their flaws and faults, because pride is in all of us, it is human nature to take pride in all of our work. The overwhelming flaw in human nature is to be consumed by this beast of pride, to take control of the chains of power and keep our pride in check. Pride is a scary thing; Antigone kept her pride in check, though when Creon is consumed by his pride it becomes his fault. Thus it reveals to us that Creon is the tragic hero in which his hamartia is revealed, which in turn is his pride.…

    Antigone is set originally in Ancient Greece in Thebes, The play is about the Princess Antigone rebelling against her Uncle, King Creon of Thebes, after he states that her brother Polyneices, who rebelled against his country, will not be buried after his death in war.
