Anthony Robbins
Crises in life can actually turn out to be blessings in disguise. Some of the world's most successful people discovered their true vocation and passion in life as a direct result of personal crisis. One of the world's most successful life coaches is Anthony Robbins, whose life reached rock bottom when his business failed. He went from 'Wonder Boy' to 'Oh Boy!' according to the way he tells the story and ended up living in a tiny apartment without even a kitchen sink, forcing him to wash his dishes in the bath.

According to Robbins, it was this personal and embarrassing public failure that forced him to rethink his life. He reevaluated his personal beliefs and values and assessed how he had ended up at such a low point in his life. He also took time to reflect on the things that really mattered to him searched deep within himself for passion and purpose. He decided that his goal was no longer to simply make a living, instead he would consciously design his life from the inside out. Anthony Robbins claims that suffering and failure can lead us to undertake a journey of personal transformation. Human beings can

There are many very successful people who have also discovered that purpose and passion go hand in hand. If you feel you have a strong purpose to fulfill, it is easy to be passionate about it. This belief system can move us away from a life of survival to one of significance. Significance refers to the impact our life has on others and on the world generally. The more significant we feel that our life is, the more passionate we are likely to become about what we are doing. As we become more passionate, we become more energized to accomplish our goals and move towards our vision. The economic benefit of living with passion is that we are able to accomplish more every day, succeed at what we do and are more likely to experience a financial reward as a result. A personal crisis can be defined as ‘a time of intense difficulty, trouble, or danger’ in one’s life. People in a situation of crisis need to find ways to overcome this period of their life, whether it is a simple solution or a gradual process. In the movie “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”, Johnny Depp plays the character of Gilbert, who must take on the role of the father in his house after his own father hangs himself. For Gilbert, this is not an easy job, and between caring for his mentally disabled brother and morbidly obese, couch bound mother, he has no time left for himself. Gilbert is not truly happy, and could be said to be in a personal crisis. The way that Gilbert copes with the situation he’s in, and continues to be selfless and responsible for his family, can demonstrate many valuable life lessons to the viewer.…

We want, sometimes even need, to move on from suffering. Suffering is what motivates us to reach for the best. Many wildly successful people have overcome things like mental illnesses and trauma. For example, J.K. Rowling battled clinical depression while writing the first book of the Harry Potter series, in fact, the dementors in the series were written as a representation of her depression. Bethany Hamilton won the Explorer’s Women’s Division of the NSSA National Championships, even after losing an arm in a shark attack. Oprah Winfrey was molested repeatedly as a child, and gave birth at 14, only to lose the child shortly after. Alexis Carrel, surgeon and author of Man, The Unknown, once said, “Man cannot remake himself without suffering, for he is both the marble and the sculptor.” I take this to mean that by remaking yourself, you become a better version of yourself, and if you want to be a better you badly enough, you can move past the suffering involved in…

    Malcolm Gladwell

Malcolm Gladwell’s arguments center around an idea he calls “thin-slicing.” Thin-slicing is the concept that our unconscious can take lightning-quick bits of experiences and use preconceived notions about behaviors and situations to interpret them. Our unconscious thin-slices the world around us on a constantly– every person we meet or even already know we thin-slice. In times of panic, our brains rely on those split-second decisions based on what we have unconsciously observed. The reactions that we have from thin-slicing are sometimes called one’s basic instincts: the inkling inside of you that you may or may not understand. This is where Gladwell gets into the idea that even when your unconscious brings these thin-slices to your conscious attention, you probably still won’t know why you feel the way you do about things. The little connections that your unconscious brain makes are behind a set of locked doors. It’s a bit off-putting to know that your brain is doing things completely unaware of what in this class we would call one’s I-function.…

Everyone goes through rough patches and struggles in their lives. People go through grief, addiction, loneliness, pain and all kinds of hardships through important points in their lives. What defines most of us and makes us who we are however, are these tragic and painful moments of struggle. The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore taught me that my own struggles and obstacles shouldn’t and cannot ever bring me down. In the introduction of the novel, Wes Moore says that “…our destinies can be determined by a single stumble down the wrong path, or a tentative step down the right one.” His statement has truly spoken to my soul, to inspire me to truly never give up and to never surrender to paths that will permanently pull me down.…

Every day we are given a fresh start; another chance to move forward in our lives and accomplish the things we thrive to achieve day to day. A new day can also liberate us from our past mistakes and provide us with a chance to change our ways. We are all faced with misery and misfortune at points in our lives, some more than others. We must recognize that it is not the burden in itself that shapes who we are, but how well or how poorly we deal with the difficulties. Sometimes misfortunes can be seen in a negative light; because it seems unjust, therefore we response in a negative matter, and become negligent to change. Overcoming tragic events is what truly counts, for we are meant to live happily and in acceptance that there are things that we cannot change. In many cases, individuals seem to feel as though they’ve lost an amount so great that they are unable to free themselves of the pain. This perspective often leads to further suffering. A Temporary Matter by Jhumpa Lahou and Kiss Me by Andrew Pyper demonstrate a loss of identity, negligence towards communication, and eventually leading to the destruction of a relationship.…
