Anthony: A Fictional Narrative
Jian laid back on his beach chair, allowing the soothing sloshing of the sea to relax him. Sure there were other sounds as well: the loud music blasting from the stereo and the chatter from the men's chatter around him, but Jian had long since learned to separate sounds having lived in a house of nine from an early age. The past three days had been eventful, but manageable and not as frightening as he had initially led himself to believe. Darren, Ben, and Cyrus seemed to have at least settled some of their differences. It wasn't a perfect situation, but it wasn't the worst either. After the phone incident, Jian had called Anthony who had seemed somewhat reluctant to come over for some reason and instead got Min and Lin to deliver Ben's phone …show more content…
Anthony had to grow up some time. Jian couldn't always be there to protect him and tell him what to do after all. It was a mantra he often repeated to himself whenever one of the people he loved got themselves into trouble. Jian's first instinct was always to shield them from the world, but that wasn't always what was the best thing to do, for the other person and for himself. He definitely didn't want to become a helicopter parent. He had seen enough of those types interning at a children's hospital.

What had his Auntie A said again? 'It's time to let them grow up on their own. Live for yourself now.' Live for himself? Jian hadn't had the heart to tell her that he didn't exactly know how to do that if he were being honest. He just didn't know what to do with himself when there was no one who needed him, but he was old enough to realize saying so would only make his family worry more for his well-being, so he had kept quiet and nodded his head

The kitchen was a dream come true. The appliances all stainless steel and pristine. And the laundry room! He had been too focused on cleaning the last time to notice much initially, but once he had taken a few minutes to gaze upon the huge, expansive caverns of the washer and dryers, Jian had nearly wept tears of joy. So many options... and they could fit so many loads! He almost hugged those gloriously made machines, but stopped himself since he didn't want to appear insane in front of strangers. Nonetheless.... he wanted them. So... so badly.

Jian quickly learned he loved being near the sea. When he was growing up, he had been far from the ocean and never wasted time going to the beach aside from short outings, but now that his room faced the shimmering stretch of blue and he was only an open window away from falling asleep to the sound of waves lapping against the sands and the smell of ocean air, Jian was a goner. If ever he one day accumulated enough money to purchase a house, he wanted to be by the

The wave was murky coming towards like a rigid and supreme barrier. It began to coil over, he looked up the wave loomed over him. His father’s words came back to him giving him an urge of determination “a true mariner never deserts a sinking ship.” It heaved itself onto his boat. The boat shredded apart, jagged pieces of timber where floating and he was left sinking. His boat had plunged into the depths of the enigmatic ocean. The salted sea pricked at his delicate eyes and his spectral face white washed. He was crawling for breath kicking his feet neurotically. He managed to clench onto a residue of his boat his naked fingers scratching the plank and splinters dashing up his finger nails. For him time felt suspended. His clothes saturated with water clinging on and sticking onto his skin. He was wrinkling like a prune. He had a vacant expression, solitude was conquering him. He had to overcome this despair as the turbulence of the storm…

Tom wondered for what seemed to be the millionth time why Dectives were required to dress like wall-street bankers or stock analysts. At least that was the expectation in public, however the moment he had the office to himself, he unknotted his tie, slipped off the linen suit jacket, and undid the top button of his shirt, then sat back in his chair, raised his eyes to the ceiling, and tapped the tip of a ballpoint pen against his teeth. That was Tom's usual mode of concentration and contemplation, and so intent was the man's focus on the new case that all else slipped from his mind, even the recollection that he'd texted his wife. Therefore, the sudden familiar sound of her voice, accompanied by the enticing aroma of barbecue, startled him, and he immediately shot upright. The sight of Lila elicited a smile that only widened with the greeting and kiss. "Sorry baby."…

The ocean acts as a symbol of a child’s best friend, encouraging the child to the fearless and chase adventure. However, the father views the ocean differently, as he sees the ocean being dangerous. As stated in the text “I have since become a salt-water man, but sometimes in summer there are days when the restlessness of the tides and the fearful cold of the sea water and the incessant wind which blows across the afternoon and into the evening make me wish for placidity of a lake in the woods” (pg 1). This quote shows that the father is fearful of the sea, and seeks the comfort of the lake because how the waves of the ocean represent no control. Summer symbolizes the father’s favorite time of the year, Summertime, oh summertime, pattern of the indelible, the fade proof lake, the woods unshatterable, the pasture with the sweet fern and the juniper forever and ever, summer without end; this was the background, and the life along the shore was the design, the cottages with their innocent and tranquil design...”(pg3). This shows the father using imagery to describe his childhood trips to the lake to bond with his father period. The positive descriptions of beauty of their annual trips show s the happy memories he associates with the season. He becomes lost in these memoires and is convinced that times does not exist. “That the…

The ocean is a beautiful sanctuary not only for the animals that coexist within it, but also for people that spend more time in the water than on land. There are instances where the sea can represent a wide array of emotions such as respect, fear, and adventure. In the story of “Children of the Sea” the sea holds lots of meaning, and the meaning is very different for each person who is out at sea. For the young man escaping after police raid his radio station, he sees the sea as opportunity. The opportunity to escape a corrupt country and continue his life, but the sea also provides heartache, as this is what separates him from the love of his life. Being at sea also gives the young man hope that one day he can make a better life for himself, as most immigrants flee to America in the hope to live a more promising life. The only way he is able to have some peace with his time at sea, is the notebook he has, where he writes to his love back at home. He tells her of the women on the boat who tell stories and sing, in an attempt to control the seasickness most of them are experiencing. He describes being at sea as lost time, stating in one of his many letters, “sometimes it feels like we have been at sea longer than the many years that I have been on this earth” (14). He is only aware that a day has passed by the raising and setting of the sun. I have always thought of the sea as something beautiful, mysterious even. The sea to me has always provided me with opportunity, the opportunity to experience something new, to explore. But this does not prove…
