Monarchy is defined as ‘a form of government with a monarch at the head’ and was the first arrangement of power in Rome after its founding by Romulus, who reigned from 753-715BC.1 However, by 510BC, the despotic actions of Tarquinius Superbus marked the end of a succession of increasingly tyrannical kings, and the ‘Roman Republic’ was established. This system was based on a sharing of power between, foremost, two consuls who were elected by the people and held office for only one year, then 300 senators, and two popular assemblies, the comitia curiata and the comitia centuriata. Rome was first established according to legend by two twins with the names of Romulus and Remus. According to legend, they were thrown in the Tiber river to drown. There uncle was fearful of what they would become. A mother wolf found them and took them in as her own. When they were older they came across what was going to be called Rome. Romulus killed Remus so that he could be, what they called an emperor later on, the first king of Rome. Rome’s geography played a key role in it becoming a huge and powerful empire. Mountain ranges in the north kept the Huns and other invaders from coming into the empire. If your house was on a hill, it was less apt to get robbed and you were much safer. The Mediterranean Sea was the center for commerce and trade. Trade was a key part in how Rome became a dominant and powerful empire. Wealth brought power and influence.…

It's the year 509 B.C. and the Romans are finally no longer under the rule of the Etruscan king. They create a republic where they elect citizens to rule. The aristocrats or patricians dominated while the plebeians had almost no say in the government. Plebeian and Patrician were kept apart and where prohibited to marry each other. Plebeians then began electing tribunes who could veto acts passed by the senate Plebeians slowly gained more power until they were able to hold the position of consul, while Patricians still bought power using their wealth. Sometimes in emergency situations the consuls and senate would elect a temporary dictator until the crisis was over. A great example is a farmer who left his farm in a time of war, became dictator and stepped down after defeating Rome's enemies The first Roman laws written down were carved into twelve stone tablets although they would be considered harsh by today's standards. They are as follows females shall remain in guardianship even when they have…
