Annotated Bibliography Elderly Abuse
McKie, David. (2007). Beaten down: Fear and violence in Canada's nursing homes. Retrieved May 1, 2009.
The author of this article, David McKie a CBC crew member describes the situation of nursing homes in Canada. He talks about abuse from the staff and from the seniors. This article specifically refers to two examples in Canada of this abuse and it also states that about seventy percent of nursing homes are a dumping place for elderly who are “mentally unstable”. McKie states that it is difficult to know exactly what is going on in nursing homes because the staff are aware when a safety check is going to happen and can fix whatever is wrong before this time comes. The CBC crew is still attempting to get more information from nursing homes in Canada but at this time the information is being hidden from the public.
This source will be extremely helpful in order to prove my hypothesis because my hypothesis states that the Canadian Government is not doing enough in senior homes. This article talks about the abuse in senior homes and this is one of the points that will be used in order to prove my hypothesis. It also specifically talks about Canadian senior homes and this is exactly what the focus of the hypothesis is.

CBC News. (2000). Elderly abused in Quebec nursing homes. Retrieved May 1, 2009 from http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2000/03/08/elderly000308.html.
This article reported by the CBC news looks at nursing homes specifically in Quebec from the year 1995 to 1999. The studies show that there is a “pattern of abuse” in Quebec nursing homes specifically from these years. Some problems that were talked about were the lack of nurses to care for the elderly, which meant some were left unclean, untreated and hungry. Another problem was that the elderly were being treated and moved around like objects causing bruises and injuries on their bodies. There was a lack of respect towards the elderly and the elderly had “little or no privacy” since some of the female

Many people now only use care facilities i.e. agencies, residential or nursing homes as a last resort as they have concerns about the quality of the care for their relative. They find that trusting these places to provide good care is hard, even though there is high need for this, this is because the public have lost respect in the system and would rather have their relatives cared for at home where they can keep a close eye on the care being given, or even care for them themselves. They feel angry and disgusted because they should be able to trust in the care system, but still there are reports of abuse.…

I interviewed a county worker with in-home supportive services. Mr. Rosen has been an advocate for years because his mother was mistreated in a home for the disabled. The support of the elderly provided by In-home supportive sources has allowed Mr. Rosen to keep his mother in the home and know that when he is gone at work she is cared for. As an advocate for the agency Mr. Rosen educates the public about knowing the signs of abuse the elderly face and speaking out against abuse. Mr. Rosen is an advocate for those who have no voice by continuously improving the standards of care givers and their responsibilities reporting a crime. Mr. Rosen explains that many of the elderly are neglected, can be taken advantage of, and mistreated by family or relatives. Caregivers have the knowhow and experience to detect abuse and put a stop to the cruelty.…

The American Society on Aging estimated that abuse in the elderly leads to a 300 percent increase in premature death, excess morbidity, and untold suffering for victims. Elder abuse victims are admitted to nursing homes at four times and to hospitals at three times the rate of non-victims (admission to the nurses’ homes is four times, and to hospital three times than the rate of non-victims) (Mosqueda, et al, 2016).…

The ‘caregiver’ is already excused by getting this label as the ‘carer’. There is also the focus on the elder individual as the catalyst to the abuse, by pushing the carer to his or her limits. The elder individual is seen as overly dependent and has added stress to the caregiver. Violence toward the elderly by their middle-aged children or others is a special form of family violence and, just like child abuse and domestic violence, deserves to be recognized, investigated and appropriate interventions provided to save victims from unnecessary…

Waking up in the middle of the night frightened and shaken up is a terrible time that each one of us can remember feeling. Then having someone close to us who we trusted come in, pick us up, and hold us tight produced a sense of security. We were able to take that security, and build a dignified and confident person that grew wiser with age. It seems though that in some instances, as we grow older and wiser, some do not get the respect and dignity that is owed to them. The security that helped build their lives has been stripped from them. Seniors end up losing the human right of having dignity and security that they have come to enjoy and live with. Our human rights do not answer to the needs of today 's elderly, either through discriminatory acts, or acts of abuse. We should all be treated with the same free discriminatory human rights as well as the opportunity to equality, as stated in the Canadian Human Rights Act (CHRA). It declares that…

Nursing homes are very under staffed and usually don’t go through the precautions that are needed to insure the elderly a safe environment. Elderly abuse is something that is usually ignored by people that don’t have any encounters with those types of situations. For example, I have heard people talk about family members or friends who do openly abuse their elderly family and have no intentions of speaking up about the situation or reporting it. I think that abuse is something that should be regularly investigated and confronted in order to take control over what is happening to the elderly in the United…

Schultz and Young (2013) describe Home Care as “Community-based care provided to individuals in their own residences”(p.361). Most seniors want to retire and live in a place where they are comfortable and where they believe they still have some kind of independence. But with this type of supportive care for the elderly came many reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation by the hands of those who were supposed to take care of them. Schultz & Young (2013) also wrote about the “corruption and abuse that were discovered among untrained and inadequate staff members. Report of unsanitary conditions, theft of residents belongings” (p.363) and many more problems were discovered. This was easily over sighted because of no federal regulations covering…

According to Twain (2008:1), elder abuse is a relatively new phenomenon, not only in South Africa but globally. When I think about the word abuse, the first representation that comes to mind is a violent beating of some sort and not so much mental abuse. One of the most commonly accepted definition is a single or repeated act occurring within a relationship where there is an expectation of trust. It is most commonly the use of power and control by one individual to affect the well-being and status of another older individual.…
