The Diary of a Young Girl is one of the most important and shocking pieces of Holocaust literature. By keeping a journal, Anne Frank did a vast service to future generations as she documented her life, and what it was like to be part of a Jewish family living in this time period. Historians and upcoming Jewish generations rely on such recollections and memoirs when they study the past. The fact that a thirteen-year-old girl such as Anne kept a detailed, thoughtful and organized diary is truly remarkable and speaks of her intelligence. Anne Frank was inspiring. In a time of great suffering, she was her own counselor in numerous ways. She realized that collecting her thoughts and feelings would help her cope with the anxiety of the war and the persecution of her own beloved people. Through Anne’s entries, it became evident that she was an intelligent girl with powerful intentions. The Diary of a Young Girl, has affected me in various and distinct manners. It has made me realize how easy my life is. I have a blessed life where I am able to do several things a teenager in the holocaust would not have the opportunity to do. Due to these living conditions, it has made it hard for me to appreciate all the little things I take for granted, such as eating candy or going to the movies. Unfortunately, Anne Frank was not as fortunate as I am. From here we learn that one may think that their day is ruined or not going as planned when in reality there are many more important things that have to be worried about. I would not be able to imagine what it would have been like to live wondering if the next day you would be killed. Apart from teaching me to give gratitude for the life I live, The Diary of a Young Girl was an awakening story that can make you realize that this can happen to just about anybody; Living a perfectly normal life then being forced to follow ruthless leaders into your own death.
