In the poem, Annabel Lee, written by the wonderful Edgar Allan Poe, the theme is expressing love for those that have passed and the mood is sadness. The first example of the theme is when the poetry states, “But we loved with a love that was more than love,-- I and my Annabel Lee,” (Edgar Allan Poe 9-10) In this example Edgar is explaining and expressing how much he believed they had loved each other believing that their love was more than just regular love. tHE second example is when the text states, “But our love it was stronger by far than the love,” (Edgar Allan Poe 27).     Anna Julia Cooper was born in 1858 to a slave and a slave owner in North Carolina. She attended St. Augustine’s Normal School and Collegiate Institute for the colored. After she graduated she began advocating for people of color especially for women of color. Cooper strongly believed that the status and well-being of black women was a central part of the progression and equality of the nation. Throughout her life she fought relentlessly to uplift black women in hopes for a more just society for everyone. She famously wrote in her book A Voice from the South, “only the black women can say when and where I enter, in the quiet, undisputed dignity of my womanhood, without violence and without suing or special patronage, then and there the whole Negro race enters with me”(Cooper 54). Cooper described her teaching profession as “the education of the neglected people,” she felt that education, more specifically higher education, as the path of black women’s advancement (55). She believed that educational development women remove any need for reliance on men (Giddings 138). In 1902 Cooper was promoted to principle at M Street School where she taught math and science. With her firm belief that education was the pathway to progress for people of color, she often rejected her white supervisors’ authorization to teach her students different types of trades, and instead she prepared them for college. Cooper sent her student’s to some of the most respected universities, which helped the M Street School get accreditation from Harvard, but rather than her success be celebrated it was received with hostility from white supervisors and white supremacy that didn’t want to see the advancement of black youth. While Cooper was teaching at the M Street School she was heavily involved in building spaces for black women outside of education. She founded the Colored Women’s League of Washington in 1892, and in1900 she helped open the first YWCA chapter for black women, in…

    Poe utilizes the raven as a means of placing a dark tone on his poem when the narrator asks if “[he] shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore-/ Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore” (94-95). The raven responds with “‘Nevermore’” (96). The widower questions the raven if he will ever get the chance to hold his wife again, and the raven replies that he will not, showing Poe’s tone of despair and misery. On the other hand, Poe creates a hopeful tone in “Annabel Lee” when, at the end of the poem, the narrator says, “And neither the angels in Heaven above/ Nor the demons down under the sea/ Can ever dissever my soul from the soul/ Of the beautiful Annabel Lee” (30-33). Declaring that even death cannot tear him and his love apart, the narrator believes that their souls will forever be together, no matter if she is in Heaven or Hell. This is much unlike “The Raven” in which the widower learns that he will never see his wife again.     The poem "Annabel Lee", written by Edgar Allan Poe, expresses mainly the emotion love. But also inscribed within it is grief, sadness, death, and jealousy. "Annabel Lee" consists of six stanzas, three with six lines, one with seven, and two with eight, with the rhyme pattern differing slightly in each one. The poem uses repetition and rhyme numerously as well as a pattern flow purposely to create its mournful effect. The poem appears like an ocean shore, the lines of the poem are long, then shorten, lengthen, then shortened again. The pattern changes after Annabel Lee's death is done being discussed, displaying a change of fate, or a change of what was expected. In the first line, "It was many and many a year ago..." it indicated that the poem is telling a story. The first stanza is fairly obvious, basically telling the background of the story. Instead of being referred to as a woman, Annabel Lee is a "maiden". Likely to express the innocence of the situation and the purity of the woman. It was obvious in the poem that the narrator was in love with this "maiden" and she loved him. In the following stanza, "I was a child and she was a child", is debated in meaning. Some believe that because of this line, it indicates the poem was about a lover when the narrorator was younger. However, the line only enlightens that their love was childlike, and when stating that they were children, it meant that they were innocent. When the narrator stated, "But we loved with a love that was more than love", it meant that though they were young, they loved with such an intensity, it seemed to create a new level of loving. In the last lines of the stanza, "With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven/Coveted her and me." it introduced a problem. That the seraphs envied the strong relationship, and it foreshadows an issue. The third stanza is the issue itself. In this stanza, Annabel Lee became severely ill and…
