The causes and effects of human interaction have been examined and questioned throughout all eras. Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy is a reliable representation of life in 1860’s Russia. Tolstoy created complicated relations between his characters. Throughout the novel, situations occurred between husband and wife, relatives, secret lovers, and quick acquaintances that are strung together in an intricate web of truths, lies, and love. Social standards play a key role as well. The setting defines the appropriate speech, action, and protocol between social classes and opposite genders. The aristocratic setting of 1860s Russia is shared between Tolstoy and his characters. Tolstoy spent his years of drinking and gambling tossed between Moscow and St. Petersburg, the main settings of Anna Karenina. His experiences formed what he created in the novel: social gatherings, public areas, and breeds of people were all derived from his life. The character that is reported to be written as autobiographical, Constantine Levin, is among the strongest parallels in the novel. Levin and Tolstoy share the desire to find life’s purpose and their position in the world. They cannot experience true happiness till meaning is established in all acts of life. Apart of the final wrap up of Anna Karenina, Levin resolves his life long inner battle with existence and comes to terms with why he was put on this earth. According to the account of Tolstoy’s life, he did not discover his meaning. However, at the time of the creation of Anna Karenina, Tolstoy did not know that he would go through life never finding what he was searching for. Levin could have been a image of hope for Tolstoy’s personal future. Tolstoy used Anna Karenina as a chance to describe his past surroundings and create his hoped for
