Marie-Laure had always been curious and questioned what ordinary people did. “‘Why not,’ she asks, ‘just take the diamond and throw it into the sea?’” (pg. 23). When she went blind however, even small tasks seemed daunting, and her father had to help her regain her courage. The Nazi’s invasion of France forces her to use that courage and not lose her mind in a seemingly difficult situation. “‘You did well, Marie-Laure. I’m proud.’” (pg. 117) says her father as they evacuate the city. Upon reaching Etienne’s house, Marie-Laure and her father settle down before her father is summoned back to the museum. However, he gets arrested along the way and sent to a German prison camp. Marie-Laure is fearful for her father despite his reassuring letters that he is alright. She becomes more secluded and isolates herself out of worry, “Only then, with her toes and fingers in the cold sea, does her mind seem to fully leave her father; only then does she stop wondering how much of his letter was true, when he’ll write again, why he has been imprisoned.”…

Duras redetermines the idea of the character in Savannah Bay. The three characters of Madeleine, Jeune Femme and Savannah cannot exist in their own rights. They all depend on each other’s action, memories, and admissions. Madeleine’s fragmented memories reflect her fragmented character. She is never a complete character, and the audience will never be granted a full picture of who she is. Jeune Femme is reliant on Madeleine for the representation of her mother, Savannah. Thus, it becomes unimportant to access the character of Jeune Femme, who, unlike Madeleine and Savannah, is not even accorded a name; she is merely a vessel present to retrieve information relating to the character of Savannah. Yet, Savannah is always absent. She is a character…

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn once said that “the battle line between good and evil runs through the heart of every man.” East of Eden is a novel written by twentieth century author John Steinbeck. The Viking Press published it in 1952. The narration takes place from 1862 to 1918, mostly in the Salinas Valley, although some episodes happen in Massachusetts and Connecticut. John Steinbeck's East of Eden depicts humanity's struggle between virtue and in as a perpetual narrative of human history. To say that there is no good in evil is to deny the very reality of evil’s existence. Black and white thinking such as the topic previously stated is what truly can hurt us the most. When you look at moral issues you must acknowledge that it is a grey spectrum, with many different viewpoints. If I told any person who has actually read East of Eden that I admired Cathy? They would think me insane and possibly give me some nasty looks, as well as cross the street when I walk past. But since you have to read this essay, I think it’s fair that I make my point. Cathy is a real go-getter, she does what she has to to make ends meet. She isn’t easily swayed, and has a strong moral foundation, whether or not it’s a good one is a moot point. Lastly, she’s not easily discouraged. Even in the face of direct adversity, she brushes herself off and keeps on trucking.…

Anna's efforts throughout the plague were transcendent, surpassing that of any other villager. The novel encompassed Anna's 'journey' throughout the course of events, having significantly more importance to the plot than the plague itself. However, it was Elinor that begun Anna on her journey, helping her see that the good she could do, no matter how trivial, could help others profoundly. It was through Elinor that Anna discovered hope, which fuelled her desire to step up as the compassionate 'hero' of Eyam. She was able to accomplish this by detaching herself from religious ideology, which was the cause of humanity seeing the world in "dark and light... [which] was how [she] was taught to view the world." Anna was able to fully embrace life, which enabled her to develop a passion for midwifing, fulfilling her characterisation as a 'hero'. Elinor's endeavours concerning the crisis, too, was of a benevolent…
