Anioskie Desir Personal Statement
On January 6, 1997, I, Anioskie Desir, was born at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida around 4:15p.m. I was raised in a strict Haitian cultural home with talented siblings 3 sisters and 4 brothers. The talents ranged from singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments. The family was members of First Church of God by Faith ministries where this I gave my life to Christ and got baptized. I graduated from Miami Edison Senior High School at the age of 18. I was a member of Voices Up choir group at my school. Serving as president of the choir I had many responsibilities for keeping the choir and also making sure that everyone showed up to practice and performances. The choir sang various types of songs ranging from gospel, R&B, and even Hip-Hop. Taking on these leadership roles was very nerve racking for a sophomore in high school but I got used to it.
As I continued my high school journey this beautiful young lady began to figure out my talents away from being in Voices Up. I insisted joining the band where I played the flute and piccolo and became section leader all in 2 years, then found out about Girl Power Girls’ Choir which helped me so much. Now as a college student who’s majoring in General Psychology with a minor in criminal justice. After being interested in this particular field for the simple fact I was watching

The high school has given me all types of opportunities from discipline to study options and also preparing me for college and the real world. I’s truly grateful for all the supports given to get this far because high school helped changed and mold me to become the young lady that I is today. It helped further my education and I continue to pray to the lord above that I can stay on track because only God knows where I’m headed with this education; but for sure it’s for a better me. Hopefully my years at Concordia will be the years of

I started first on the bass drum, with me being on of the smallest members, I looked pretty comical. Although, I didn’t care, I was only gracious to be a part of such an amazing and talented group of individuals. Choir and singing then became a big aspect of my life and educational career as well; meeting new friends and peers along the way was one of my most cherished memories. I first started singing in middle school, and then continued into my high school years as well. I can honestly say that by joining band and choir, it has connected me with life long friends and has given me many forever cherished memories. They have both pushed me in ways that I couldn’t have pushed myself, taught me many valuable life lessons, gave me the gifts of perseverance and concentration, and have shaped me into the able woman I am today. Over the years I’ve taught others to love music just as much as I do by working with middle and elementary school children. I have also taught at the preschool program located in my high school, desiring to teach them how to push past the obstacles they can not prevent and redirecting their feelings into positivity and valuable…

Music has always been a very important part of my life. As a child, I was mesmerized by Disney’s Fantasia 2000 and watched the Disney sing-a-longs over and over. I began playing piano at a young age, and in middle school added more instruments to my list, such as flute, saxophone, and ukulele. I have had many opportunities to perform both solos and ensemble performances, but none of them have impacted me as much as my interactions with an elderly man named Mr. Roland Goff, or as we called him in my church, Brother Goff. When I was in 5th grade, I played a piano song in church entitled A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief. A couple years later, Brother Goff’s wife passed away and my family started spending more time with him. He told me he remembered the song I played in 5th grade and how much he loved it. I had many other opportunities to play in church as well, and he remembered and enjoyed each of them. It was then that I started…

I wasn’t the greatest singer in the world, but I still had confidence; confidence in that I can do better and learn. Ms. Janke helped build that confidence by being my own personal voice teacher twice a week after school and I saw much improvement. I would have never considered singing, especially to a crowd of people, but this all changed when I met Kate. She was my choral instructor for three years while attending school. I saw much improvement in my voice range and tone. I improved so much that I got up the courage and sang the national anthem at one of our high school’s football games. When it was all said and done, people were looking at me and applauding. Ms. Janke once told me that I can do anything if I just worked hard. Because of my National Anthem performance, she was right. To this day I sing for people, and when I help people in their musical struggles I pass down her message to work hard, have confidence, and to not give…

I wanted to try a lot of new things, and I decided that high school is the place to start. I didn't only want to go to this school because of the chance of success, but because of the experience I will gain. The drab thought of not getting into BCTHS would've made me sullen. The thought of high school always scared me until I was told one day that high school is all about what you make it, so I decided to concede my fears. I decided that if you choose not to do the work, you are choosing to be unsuccessful and to be displaced out of the school. If you choose to be out going, thoughtful, respectful, and courageous, it will be everything you hope for. Once I have realized that I was the only thing standing between making or breaking my high school experience, I knew this was where I needed to be to be happy. I decided that there was one school I had to attend to insure that my high school experience would be everything I wanted it to be, and that school was BCTHS. I am now not afraid to attend high school, and I cant wait to embark on this journey with you and all of my other…

I’ve also enjoyed dedicating part of every summer to improve my musical skills by attending various camps, including Longlake Camp for the Arts, Eastern U.S. Music Camp at Colgate University and Interlochen Camp for the Arts, where I was just invited to return on the basis of last summer’s performance. While I know that there may be others with comparable or better talent, my passion serves as the constant motivation for me in music as well as other aspects of my life. For example, being a dedicated Honor Roll student, taking weekly Temple classes and performing community service has been important and demanding as well. Managing these priorities has taught me a lot about tenacity, friendship and balance.…
