CHAPTER 1.INTRODUCTION
Experiments on living animals arose in the early 17century. The history of animal testing is interesting aspects of what remains a controversial subject today. Animal testing has a major history oppressed with controversy, although most of these activities occurred as a response to increasing awareness regarding the fact of using animals for experimental purposes. Though animal testing may at certain times conjure up the image of dubious, the reality is that animal testing is performed in limitless places around the globe such as universities, medical schools, military defence establishments and many more. As reasons for this usage grow more widely, one of the major reasons for the use of animal testing is the broadness of its applications (to ensure the safety of new drugs and other pharmaceutical products, to see whether such products might be effective in humans, for general research into the biology of an animal, or the function and action of certain diseases within its body) Major industries that performs the usage of animal testing in the pharmaceutical and the cosmetic industry both of which needs large scale testing before distributing their products to the public. The pharmaceutical industry is a wide billion dollar industry, with major competition in between to find the next breakthrough drug, any drug which maybe newly being introduced requires rigorous pharmaceutical testing to ensure its safety towards human beings. Prior to performing human clinical trials, drugs require to be tested on animals to ensure the safety and to monitor the side effects either positive or negative. This allows researchers to understand how the drugs are metabolized and how they effect on different types of body systems. Testing cosmetics on animals is a form of animal testing intended to ensure the safety hypoallergenic properties of the products for use by humans. Using animal testing in the development of cosmetics may involve testing either a finished product or the individual ingredients of a finished product on animals, often rabbits, but also mice, rats, and other animals. In some cases, the products or ingredients are applied to the mucous membranes of the animal, including eyes, nose, and mouth, to determine whether they cause allergic or other reactions. Thus the most important question argued here is “MICE OR MEN”, throughout the years many have argued for and against the misuse of animals and the cruelty involved in it, as animal testing involves activities whereby animals go through burning of skin, cutting of body parts, starvation, and pain in many ways. In my argument, my followed perspective is that animal testing should not be continued. Though many people may try to reason with the fact that human life maybe more worthy than of animal the fact of the situation is that each of these sides needs to be equally treated. It should be that if we as humans have many rights in all aspects, animals as living beings should also have their own rights to be protected. In my opinion I believe that if human beings have the knowledge and technology to build artificial intelligence and rockets that can fly to the moon, they are more than capable of creating alternatives for testing of cosmetic or pharmaceutical products. Lives of animal may not be worth as some may argue, but as a principle of mine I believe that taking the life of an innocent for the purpose good or bad is not the correct path. It is understandable that during the times of no technology that animals were being used to protect the lives of human beings, but today in a world where everything is possible, humans needs to act more tolerably towards such cruelty acts.
