Animal Testing
Medical research involving animals has dramatically improved the health of the human race. Without animal testing, cures for rabies and anthrax would not exist and people with diabetes would suffer or die from their disease. Despite these benefits, some people are against animals being used to test medical techniques and drugs. This essay will explain the advantages and explanations of animal testing.
Animal testing allows scientists to test and create new drugs. Animals such as monkeys or rabbits have similar physical systems to humans. This allows scientists to test the effects of certain drugs. If a drug produces unfortunate effects in animals, it is more than likely unsuitable for use. If animal testing wasn’t allowed, then in order to prove the efficiency of drugs and medicines human testing would have to take place. Also, many believe that humans have been using animals to satisfy their needs like eating meat or using the animals for various other necessary purposes than why not animal testing? Also, humans use animals for clothes too. Boots, coats, wool sweaters are all made from animal skin and fur, so why is animal testing a problem if it’s not necessarily one hundred percent deadly?
In addition, animal testing is cheap. There is a large supply of animals for medical research. Animals are easily bred and maintained safely in controlled labs. Rats and mice breed very quickly, meaning that the supply can be restocked quickly. The costs of testing on humans would be extremely high. More research can be done and at less expense than testing with humans, who may not only be in danger but would probably need to be highly compensated. Testing humans would be even more controversial than testing on animals because you would have to find a person who is willing to be tested on. If scientists did not use animals for animal testing, they would have to use humans for cosmetic, drug and chemical testing. In testing cosmetics, for example, if there are any harmful ingredients it well show the effects on the animal. Therefore, humans are at less risk for getting the possible side effects like rashes, burning, and swelling. An example of why animal testing is cheaper than testing on humans is that mice, rats and other lab animals are inexpensive (one mouse costs about $2) and easy to care for. Also, if you tried to test a cure for cancer it would be a lot harder to find a human test subject than testing on a mouse or monkey.
Furthermore, many people argue that animal testing is cruel. In some cases, this is true. However, it would be much crueler to test new drugs on people or children, or to let people die because there was not enough information about a certain drug that is in fact saving people’s lives. If animal testing is eliminated, that many of the medications and procedures that we currently use today wouldn't exist and the development of future treatments would be extremely limited. However, animals themselves benefit from the results of animal testing. If vaccines were not tested on animals, millions of animals would have died from rabies, distemper, leukemia, hepatitis virus, tetanus, anthrax, and more. Another example is the heartworm medication that was devised from research on animals has assisted many dogs. So animals too have benefited from their own testing. Additionally, legislation in most countries sets standards for animal treatment. Many countries have laws protecting the welfare of animals, and of these, many have specific laws governing the treatment of animals involved in scientific procedures. This legislation is in place to ensure that the cost of any scientific experiments, in terms of animal suffering, is balanced by the potential benefit of the research.
Given these points, animal testing is absolutely necessary. They test on animals because it would be ethically, morally, medically and legally indefensible to give a human being a substance which had never before been given to a living organism. Animal testing has been very beneficial to humans and especially those suffering from diseases and infections. The more research that can be done in the shorter amount of time means that new drugs to treat more diseases can be produced more rapidly, once again potentially saving lives.

The first reason is that animal testing harms animals. For example, more than 100 million animals die every year due to chemical, drug, and food tests (Animal Testing 101). This is important information because that is a large amount of animals lost every year. Some of these things that people are testing animals on are not even necessary so animals could be dying for no good reason. Also, many animal tests are cruel procedures some include feeding dogs pesticides, forcing mice to inhale toxic fumes, and dripping corrosive liquid into rabbits’ eyes (Animal Testing 101). In addition, rabbit eyes are very sensitive and dripping chemicals in them can cause major damage and pain to the rabbit.…

In the late 1500s English physician William Harvey revolutionized physiology and relied on knowledge gathered from animal experiments to learn more about humans. Today, biomedical research throughout the U.S. has recorded using several million animal test subjects per year. Why are these numbers so high? One reason is because the Food and Drug Administration requires all new medicine in the United States to be tested on animals before moving on to human trials. Starting with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty in England in the early 1800s, animal rights groups have formed to fight for the ban against animal testing (Fellenz, Marc R).…

The first reason why we shouldn’t have animal testing is because animals are getting hurt or abused. “Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused in US labs every year.” The chemicals that the people are using are burning or other worse things to them. The chemicals that they use on the animals could hurt or kill them. Over half of side effects cannot be detected in…

Researchers have found out that 90% of drugs tested on animals that aren't harmful to them are to humans or don't have any affect on them.(Source 5). 90%! ,then why keep using animals? The testing on these poor animals is pointless! Scientist are just wasting money like it is nothing. If 90% of experiments are useless, then why are there over 100 MILLION experiments taking place in the U.S alone?(Source 5) Why is animal testing still a thing, people are just making innocent creatures suffer! If there is no valid reason to continue testing on animals, if it is only creating more deaths, then why do people still…

Animal testing has always been a big issue around the world. Some people think that it is okay for animals to be tested on while others don’t. What even is animal testing? Animal testing is where scientists find new medications and test them on the animals before humans. Why might scientists test them on animals first? So, that if something goes wrong, only the animal would suffer and not a human. I am a critic for animal testing. I believe that animals have a purpose to the world just as much as humans do. Even if people don’t like rodents, that doesn’t mean we need to try and potentially kill them. Animals are very important to this world just like everyone else.…

Research shows that 26 million animals have been used for testing of all different kinds. 26 million animals have been put through wringer for the sake of a human. 26 million animals have had no say, defense, or chance to save themselves. Animals are used as human experiments to see if a certain product can work or not. Animal testing is wrong on many different levels. If humans are not willing to use, test and experiment on themselves, why should one be allowed to test on an animal who has no say in what happens.…

One compelling reason to put a stop to animal testing is it’s unreliable. In fact a drug tested safe on animals was released and turned out to be toxic.Surely if we are relying on animal testing to cure diseases, it should be almost 100% accurate so children or adults who end up taking that drug to help them with their illness don’t end up dead. Also animal and human systems are quite different, penicillin is toxic to guinea pigs.Penicillin a drug, we use is toxic to guinea pigs an animal that could have prevented this drug from coming out because a guinea pig could have tested it and clearly the animal would have a negative reaction. One final example is 92% of drugs approved for testing in human trials fails to be approved for human use.Clearly animal testing is unreliable.…

Another important aspect to note is that animal testing helps to ensure the safety of drugs and many other substances humans use or are exposed to regularly. Drugs in particular can carry significant dangers with their use but animal testing allows researchers to initially gauge the safety of drugs prior to commencing trials on humans. This means that human harm is reduced and human lives are saved - not simply from avoidance of the dangers of drugs but because the drugs themselves save lives as well as improve the quality of human life.…

Others might say that animal testing is good because we can find cures for some of the terrible diseases that live here. It is more true that only 2% of the cures actually works. Also, that 2% has a chance to hurt people also. But it is true that some of the cures such as, lung cancer, birth defects, and spinal cord injuries. But if you are going to do animal testing and let it continue you should use more common animals such as rats, mice, and maybe ducks but not monkeys and other more endangered…

There are several limitations to animal testing, such as, the physical differences between an animal and human skin. Human skin can be more sensitive to certain chemicals than animal skin. Many times, some chemicals pass the test with animals but not with humans. Using alternatives to animal testing can give more accurate results and it is cheaper. Many cosmetic companies that insure the animals being tested on are not treated poorly, but in reality they are. Hundreds of animals die every day due to the fact that people pour so much chemicals onto their skin to test toxicity levels. Animals cannot talk and that is why people need to be their voices. Consumers have the power to stop animal testing by not buying animal tested products. Experimentation on animals is unnecessary and cruel. Even though there are some animals who share an enormous amount of DNA with humans, human skin still differs from animal…

Testing on animals helps society develop vaccines and help our understanding on how society can eliminate certain viruses. Some mammals have the same set of organs as humans and even a close and similar bloodstream and nervous system. Here is a quote that from the Biomedical Research Association that shows society how powerful animal testing is.“The California Biomedical Research Association states that nearly every medical breakthrough in the last 100 years has resulted directly from research using animals”. Without us testing on animals we would be dead. Some might say we are using up a lot of our food supply on animals being used for testing, well people in the United States eat “9 billion chickens and 150 million cattle, pigs and sheep annually, yet we only use around…
