There are many animals in the world. Some of them as small as ants and some are even bigger than elephants. These animals live throughout the world, some in the gigantic oceans, some in the coldest of Antarctica or some in the hottest of deserts. These are the classes of animals, mammals, amphibians, birds, reptiles, and insect. Reptiles are cold-blooded vertebrates. They have dry skin covered with scales or bony plates, and they usually lay eggs. Reptiles can be classified into three groups, turtles, snakes, and lizards. There are lots of species of turtles, like the sea turtle who live in the oceans. They can be identified by their long, streamlined shell and their color range of olive-green, yellow, greenish-brown, reddish-brown, or black.…

    * Students will build on their knowledge by first trying to group animals simply based on a chart of pictures and a name. They will then learn that scientists use different characteristics when grouping animals and then will try to find another way to regroup the chart of living things. * Next they will look at animals grouped as vertebrate or invertebrates and determine why they are grouped that way and write down their definitions of each word. * They are then introduced to the five vertebrate groups and compare and contrast the different characteristics. * The final formative assessment is to revisit the vertebrate list from Activity 2 and classify the vertebrates into the appropriate animal group.Lesson 5 will serve as the student’s summative assessment. This is assessment is worth 100 points. * Partners will create a flowchart that can be used to help someone classify an animal. The flowchart will demonstrate the student’s knowledge of animal groups (mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian and fish), what characteristics the animals in that group have in common and how someone can use that information to classify an animal. * The flowchart must contain all five vertebrate groups, the characteristics of each group and how someone would use that information and follow the flowchart to determine the classification of an animal. * Students will receive 4 points per animal group listed for a maximum of 20 points earned and 5 points for each animal characteristic listed, for a maximum of 30 points. They will receive 25 points for presentation and 25 points for use of key vocabulary words. * Students will be expected to show that they know the characteristics of all five animal classes.…

As each group is split into smaller groups, the organisms are more and more alike. For instance, a White-tailed Deer, an Eastern Gray Squirrel, and an Eastern Chipmunk are all in the Mammal Class together. This is because they have more in common with each other than with other animals, such as turtles, birds, or insects. However, it is easy to notice that there are some big differences between a deer and squirrels and chipmunks. The White-tailed Deer is in the Aritiodactyla Order (Even-toed Hoofed Mammals), while squirrels and chipmunks are both in the Rodentia Order (Rodents).…

I checked if the topic (Taxonomy) was indeed included in the Science and Health curriculum of UPIS which was based on the Basic Education Curriculum Handbook in Science and Health (Elementary Level). Upon checking the goals, the closest one for Grade VI was the ecosystem, while the exact match could be seen in Grade V under the classification of plants and animals. I double checked by scanning the scope part and indeed found out that the major groups of animals were discussed in Grade V and not Grade VI. As there were topics on animals, plants and the environment in the Grade VI scope, I assumed that the teacher was just giving them a…
