Topic 2:
Snowball represents a morally legitimate political alternative to the corrupt leadership of Napoleon. Do you agree? Discuss with close reference to the text.
In the novella Animal Farm written by George Orwell, Snowball appears to be the more ethical leader in comparison to the corrupt Napoleon, however there is uncertainty about Snowball’s character. In the short time that Snowball had authority over Animal Farm, he seemed to be a righteous head of power. On closer inspection though, it is revealed Snowball is not completely honourable. Ultimately, it is hard to know whether Snowball would have carried on his moral leadership, due to his brief time in power. Snowball, in contrast to Napoleon, is conveyed as having more integrity.
Snowball’s control of Animal Farm is seen as decent, whereas Napoleon’s is corrupt. Snowball actually contributed as a political head with ideas to improve Animal Farm. He “buried himself with organising the other animals into what he called Animal Committees. He was indefatigable at this.” –pg 19. Snowball devoted time and effort for the success of the other animals. Napoleon said, “Comrade Snowball will lead the way. I shall follow in a few minutes.” –pg 16. This shows that Snowball did direct the animals as a respectable leader. Also, this demonstrates how already Napoleon secluded himself from the others, by acting narcissistic. Napoleon’s dishonesty continues to grow when he makes paradoxical laws, where the “work was strictly voluntary, but any animal who absented himself from it would have his rations reduced by half.” –pg 35. In Animal Farm Snowball is depicted to be a reasonably moral leader in opposition to Napoleon’s bent leadership.
In Animal Farm not everything Snowball did was in the best interest of the animals. Snowball never contested that it was unfair to all the other animals besides the pigs, that “the milk and the windfall apples... should be reserved for the pigs alone.” –pg 22 and, “all the pigs were in full agreement on this point, even Snowball and Napoleon.” –pg 22. This is evidence that Snowball was equally appalling as Napoleon on this idea of the pigs being the top of the hierarchy. Snowball also is portrayed as a coward, when he “slipped through a hole in the hedge and was seen no more.” –pg 32. It suggests that Snowball was not a whole-hearted leader of the farm, due to his lack of fighting for the leadership and abandonment of the animals. Animal Farm under Snowball’s authority is not completely righteous.
From the short time Snowball had leadership it is hard to decide whether he would have continued to be an ethical leader. He was absent for so long that the animals believed “it was he who had actually been the leader of the human forces, and had charged into battle with the words ‘Long live Humanity!’” –pg 66. This is evidence that Snowball’s authority really was short lived when his image had been totally twisted. There came a point where simply “Snowball was forgotten” –pg 72, that his time spent on Animal Farm was too diminutive to be a lasting memory. Whether Snowball’s status would have remained pure if he had stayed as a leader on Animal Farm is unknown.
Snowball is depicted to be the more morally legitimate head of power compared to the corrupt leadership of Napoleon, yet there is doubt regarding Snowball’s nature in the novella Animal Farm. Snowball’s control over Animal Farm is portrayed as decent. Through further examination though, it is evident that Snowball is not fully moral. Due to lack of time in power, it is unclear if Snowball would continue to be an honourable leader unaffected by corruption.

As soon as I started reading the novel “Animal Farm” by George Orwell I knew Snowball was gonna be my favorite character. Snowball had everything, he was brave, encouraging, and admirable. Then one day everything changed when something went horribly wrong, Snowball was blamed for it. The time the windmill was destroyed for the very first time it clearly states in the passage the blaming “Do you know who is responsible for this? Do you know the enemy who has come in the night and overthrown our windmill? SNOWBALL” (Orwell 51). Snowball had spectacular ideas and was just a startling leader overall, everything was amazing, but suddenly it all went down hill. He fights the humans in battle against the humans and commands them successfully. This quality makes him most suitable because he is fighting for the animals to overpower the humans. His inventiveness allows for the society of animals to prosper over the humans; the inventions allow them to build their society up. He reads and learns to make Animal Farm better, while trying to educate the other animals too. Overall, Snowball is more involved with the animals and doesn’t want to have more power than them. Napoleon on the other hand, is more of a dictator and is more concerned for himself. For example, when he overlooks the commandments for himself. He takes Snowball’s ideas and claims they are his. Also, Napoleon acts much more immature than Snowball. For instance, “then suddenly he lifted his leg, urinated over the plans, and walked out without uttering a word.” He doesn’t handle disputes maturely and his actions show this. Also, he blames Snowball for the destruction of the windmill, even though it was the storm. Snowball is the obvious candidate to govern Animal Farm and is best for protecting all the animals that reside there. Napoleon seems to be covering the farm from animalism to communism. All of the animals of Animal Farm should rally together and say, “Snowball for everyone, Napoleon for…

In the satiric novel entitled Animal Farm by George Orwell, the character Snowball exemplifies Leon Trotsky, and leads the animals to rebel against Farmer Jones in order to attain freedom. The character Snowball is portrayed as ambitious, brilliant, and eloquent and he made sure that Animal farm was self sufficient. At the beginning of chapter 5, in animal farm, Snowball is presented as popular with the animals, and skilled at raising support for himself among them. Orwell writes that ‘Snowball often won over the majority by his brilliant speeches’. This shows that he is both good with words and persuasive, as well as liked. Later, when he is banished, the animals are shown as wary, and one even protests against it saying that ‘he fought bravely at the battle of the cowshed’. By demonstrating that the animals were willing to stand up against his exile, even though they are now terrified of Napoleon, Orwell has made it obvious that they did like and support him, and that they are upset and worried that he is gone. This demonstrates a similarity to Trotsky, from the Russian revolution, as he was popular and well known among the Russian population, who saw him as an inspirational leader. But Trotsky was also then banished, just as Snowball is.…

Arguably, another similarity and difference portraying Napoleon and Snowball are the relationships they built and ignored with their fellow animals and their views on life and leadership. Throughout the novel, Napoleon has only formed relationships with a finger full of people; including Squealer, his army of mine puppies, and the other pigs. Squealer was Napoleon's second in command, always reported back to him for any problems and praised Napoleon's work to the other animals by manipulating and giving excuses to why Napoleon is doing the certain things that are happening. This quote shoes the lies Squealer tells to cover his comrade and make him look innocent. Ever since Napoleon had stole Jessie's puppies, he used them to become his bodyguards…

In this book Napoleon and Snowball represent actual historical figures of Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky. They had started as allies at the beginning of the Russian Revolution, like how Napoleon and Snowball were friends when Old Major was alive. After the Russian Revolution Stalin was able to intimidate Trotsky into exile and had him assassinated. This was like when Napoleon drove Snowball away with his vicious dogs. George Orwell also showed allegory in this book by having Napoleon make the animals look at Old Major’s skull when they have Sunday meetings, just like Stalin had Lenin in a glass coffin so everyone can see his dead corpse.…

The story of Animal Farm is not just one of a group of farm animals laying eggs or eating hay. Rather, the tale depicts a pig’s tyrannical and abusive regime that mirrors the corrupt and terrifying government that controlled Russia during the mid-1900’s -- Stalinism. The farm functions as a tractable country that is taken under the control of Stalin’s allegorical representation, a pig named Napoleon. George Orwell, in Animal Farm, condemns the corrupt actions of Stalin during the Russian Revolution as tyrannic and disgraceful.. He does so by depicting one of Stalin’s most oppressive actions in a scene where Napoleon, Stalin’s allegory, exiles Snowball, an allegory opponent during the Russian Revolution.…
