Animal Farm Chapter 9
Animal Farm
Chapter IX

Pan-Africanism and colonialism

In this chapter Boxer is getting weaker due to his injury, but decides keep building the windmill. It was agreed that horses could only retire at the age of twelve and Boxer approaching the age.
Rations are reduced again, and the animals are not allowed lanterns in their stalls anymore in order to save oil, except for the pigs and dogs. Also, 31 piglets are born (Napoleon’s). He decides to build the schoolhouse to educate them ( since only the pigs seem to have privileges in the farm) and discourage them from interacting with the other animals.
Boxer collapses while pulling a stone for the windmill and the pigs announce that will bring him to a human hospital but is sent to a glue maker to be slaughtered. The animals panic and try to save him but fail.
Squealer deceives the animals by telling them that the cart that picked up boxer was from the hospital and just bought it off from a glue ma, this putting the animals at ease.

The pigs force the hens to lay more eggs and the cows to produce more milk to sell, all whilst claiming the farm is running better than it had before the revolution. The story ends with the pigs refuting the rules that were the tenets of the rebellion. “The creatures looked from pig to man, and from man to pig; but already it was impossible to say which was which”. This shows that the farm is no longer democratic, and the pigs are now just like men, the former dictators.…

I believe that the novel proves the saying “ignorance is bliss” is true. Napoleon and the other pigs are able to take control of the farm because of the other animals’ ignorance. Throughout the story the animals are happy because they have no grasp of what Napoleon is doing. For example Boxer the horse said, “If Comrade Napoleon says it, it must be right” (40). Another example is, “it did not seem strange when Napoleon was seen strolling in the farm house garden with a pipe in his mouth”…

After Boxer’s death, the biggest question was not, will we be able to finish the windmill? Or will we be able to produce as much work without him? No, the real question was what was gonna happen to his colt, Crimson? Though not many knew it, Boxer had been the father to a young foal that he cared very much for. Crimson was said to be one of the only animals that would ever be able to take his father's place.…

Don’t forget the fact that he would work for an hour or two at night alone when everyone was gone, p.27. Basically, Boxer greatly contributed the more physically demanding tasks. Napoleon and Squealer immediately started to enforce their own rules. Many of the commandments that the Animals made were changed. For instance, the first commandment, “Whatever goes upon two legs is a enemy.” was changed as soon as the pigs start walking on two legs. Now it’s four legs good two legs better. The fifth commandment was also changed. At first it was “No animal shall drink alcohol.” but is changed to “No animal shall drink alcohol to excess.” “No animal shall kill any other animal.” was changed to "No animal shall kill any other animal without cause." Like these commandments all the others were changed, to benefit the pigs that were in charge. Napoleon taking over the farm did nothing to benefit the animals or the farm. The pigs changing all the commandments and rules, is causing the farm to go away from the roots of what it was grown…

Boxer is a workhorse in the book, ‘Animal Farm’. He is the farm's strongest, most committed and loyal laborer. He is very loving towards the other animals and watches out for them. He has several mottos right through from the beginning of the story that represents his character, such as: "I will work harder." and "Napoleon is always right." This shows that he is naive and rarely suspects anything. Boxer is also quite dumb and can only remember four letters of the alphabet at any time. He is a loyal supporter of Napoleon, listening to everything the so-called leader of the farm says and assumes, mostly without doubt, that everything Napoleon tells the farm animals is true and beneficial, highlighting his motto: "Napoleon is always right.”…

Many of the animals admired Boxers strengths and ablities. "Boxer was the admiration of everybody", "He had been a hard worker even in Jone's time". Boxer was always up and about. In the book it reads that “Three days later it was announced that he had died in the hospital at Willingdon, in spite of receiving every attention a horse could have. Squealer came to announce the news to the others. He had, he said, been present during Boxer’s last hours...Some of the animals had noticed that the van which took Boxer away was marked ‘Horse Slaughterer,’ and had actually jumped to the conclusion that Boxer was being sent to the knacker’s” (Orwell 124/125). Squealer made up a story that Boxer was in a great care, but in reality, he was sent to be killed. He was sent to the glue factory/horse slaughterer! Squealer did not let the animals believe the truth. The media can cover up things that the government does not want out. They can even distract us with other not-so-important things. We must be careful of their reports to help ourselves.…
