Animal Farm By George Orwell Analysis

Nowadays, Eric Arthur Blair is considered to be one of the “most influential political writers of the twentieth century”. (Claeys, 391) The average person is probably more familiar with Blair’s literary name George Orwell. This famous pseudonym is mostly associated with a dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-four published in 1948 that ever since then “has probably outsold all the rest of the utopias and dystopias ever written put together” (Claeys, 391). This highly famous literary work was preceded by an equally valuable political satire which was put on the market in 1945 for the first time. Apart from being a political satire, Animal Farm is a very clever allegory focusing mainly on the political leaders of pre-Soviet and Soviet Russia and also on real historical events preceding and following the Russian Revolution of 1917. One of these allegories is the allegory of the Russian Orthodox Church
Mr Jones is forced to run away with his men and his wife. Even “Moses sprang off his perch and flapped after her, croaking loudly.” (Orwell, 8) The Rebellion is successful and the animals begin to transform the life on the farm according to the ideas of Animalism. There is a direct link between this rebellion against the farm owner and its consequences on one side and real historical events which occurred in tsarist Russia at the beginning of the 20th century on the other side. The rebellion is connected to the Russian Revolution of 1917 which overthrown the tsarist regime and placed the Bolsheviks in power. Right after the October Revolution, the Bolsheviks started with the oppression of the previously criticised Russian Orthodox Church. In 1927 the Church even became the subject of state power. It was completely subordinate to it. Everybody had to follow the ideas of Bolshevism. Those who did not do so were imprisoned in concentration
