Foster care is the home placement of children living in situations considered to be in an at risk environment. Abuse and neglect are usually the main causes for the removal of a child from the home. Change of home care is generally intended for temporary purposes to for the primary care giver to regain stability. Provisional interference is the initial intent when removing a child from the home but isn 't always the result depending on the severity of exposure to danger. The objective is positive, to remove children from hazardous circumstances, but has also been associated with the negative developmental consequences that place children at risk for behavioral, psychological, developmental, and academic…
Over the last two decades, Laura Motes has dedicated her spare time to supporting the local animal shelters and rescue group in her county. Laura will donate her time and her money to this worthwhile cause.…
All the while, millions of animals are being euthanized every year, due to pet’s owners turning them out on the streets or being surrendered to the shelters. According to Kenny (2012), “As of 2011, it is estimated that there are over seventy-eight million dogs in the United States, only twenty-one percent of these pets were adopted from animal shelters. Six to eight million dogs and cats enter shelters across the country each year and three to four million of these animals are¬¬¬ euthanized in the shelter system.” (Kenny, 2012). According to the ASPCA (2017), Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are…
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is affecting many combat veterans returning from the current wars or those that have returned from the past wars. PTSD can affect the veteran for the rest of his or her life if not found and treated early. Some may self-medicate to help numb the pain from memories. Research has and still is being conducted to find alternative ways that do not use prescriptions. Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) uses many different types of animals (e.g. cats, dogs, or horses) for therapy. Through research it has been discovered that having an animal helps relieve PTSD triggers in many veterans. Service…
According to PBS there are over one 135,000 adoptions each year (Liem, Opper, and Wang-Breal, 2010). As this number continues to grow, it is clear that adoption is becoming a large part of culture today. Adoption is a vast and diverse topic with endless opportunities for discussion therefore; we narrowed down our research and specifically chose to study the lasting effects of adoption on a family. This paper will provide an overview of the topic and a summary of the research used.…
For decades, nature versus nurture debate has been an ongoing argument among experts studying life span development. Those who believe that nature is the determining factor of development argue that genes determine an individual 's personality, attitudes, and behavior. The other side of the debate among experts is that nurture or experiences and environment have the most influence on development. Santrock states, "nature refers to an organism 's biological inheritance, nurture to its environmental experiences" (Santrock, 2007, p. 17). This paper will take the debate a little further by examining whether nature or nurture has more of an influence on children raised…
In our reading this week, I discovered some reason why parents want to adopt or become foster parents. One of such reasons is that of infertility, this is one of the major reasons because it affects both men and women. Male for example may have problem with sperm production or the woman may have problem with fertility as the case may be, the couple can decide to go for adoption or to become a foster parent. I found that foster and adopted parent are not similar, foster parents is a means of providing temporary homes to children because they are yet to be re-united with their family, and if re-unification is not possible, such parent may be adopted. This…
Imagine not understanding what you are doing, not even fully knowing who is coming to get you, and where you are going is a mystery in itself. These are all thoughts and questions that might run through a childs mind who is being adopted by a family that lives in a different country. This is an international adoption, and it can be controversial in the U.S along with other countries for different reasons. International adoption has gone throughout history adjusting as it has to, but it's not the only thing that has changed both what the parents go through and the children adapting have evolved as time goes on too. No matter how much is done to make this process easier there are always challenges that remain to face everyone affiliated with the process.…
Every year, 1.21 million children are aborted. These kids are not given the opportunity to experience a life that they could have had. The parents who want to abort their children could have prevented having a baby if they didn’t want to have them in the first place. The child who is being aborted should not have to pay for their parents’ mistakes by not having a life. There are people in this world who would love to have a child that don’t have one. If a parent doesn't want to keep their child they could put them up for adoption. At least the child could experience life and have the chance of being loved by others by being in an adoption home. Abortion should not be allowed in the United States because it’s not fair to couples who want to have a baby but can’t, people who abort have later life regrets, and it’s like killing someone. Abortion is very wrong and should be expunged.…
Living is a harsh time and community wasn’t only difficult for the parents, but for their children. Kids were put on the streets and left to strive for themselves, leaving most to die or take up harsh jobs which in the end, could kill you. The development of orphanages, foster care, and mostly adoption from 1900’s until present day, helped children from living in a bad home or the streets to having a stronger and healthier life. Living in poverty is difficult but giving your kid a safe home is important. As orphanages slowly became scarce in our country, new and better ways of child support and care have been improved by foster homes and even better, adoption.…
Perhaps things can be made clearer if the tables should turn. Perhaps if it should ever occur that animals become masters of this planet, and we human beings become “slaves”—the scientific research targets that we would develop both sympathy and empathy towards animals. It is said that the…
Children and adolescents are raised in different family constellations that shape their identity, behavior, and emotions. Generally, when a child is raised in a broken home, foster care placement is an ideal option posed from the Department of Family Services (DFS). Foster care is group home or private home in which a minor is placed through the DFS and cared for from a foster parent. A child is placed in foster care when family circumstances endanger a child or the parent in unable to sufficiently provide the child with enough care. Within the inability to provide for care, important factors are child abuse, neglect, and addictions that are highly taken into consideration as endangerment for the child/adolescent.…

What is foster care and why would kids be placed in it? Foster Care is where minors are placed in a temporary home with a foster parent or parents. The placement is run through the government or a social service agency. “Most kids go into foster care or go to a foster family because his or her mom or dad has a problem with drugs or alcohol.” (“Foster Care”).“Other children are removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect and placed in Foster Care.” (“The Future of Children”). People need to understand what foster care is and why kids have to leave their homes, before judging who or what the kids have been through.…
