It has been a worrying trend over the years in Jamaica where animals are extensively abused; these acts occur in instances of starvation, negligence, improper or no health care and violence towards animals.
In addressing the latter first, recently I was going home along the prospect main road in Port Antonio and saw three dogs within a 10-chains distance -dead on the roadway seemingly being hit by cars.

Animal abuse is not just the result of a minor personality flaw in the abuser; it is a symptom of a deep mental disturbance. Research in psychology and criminology shows that people who commit acts of cruelty towards animals rarely stop there, many of them move on to their fellow human.
Cruelty to animals, also called animal abuse or animal neglect, is the infliction of suffering or harm upon non-human animals, for purposes other than self-defense. More narrowly, it can be harm for specific gain, such as killing animals for food or for their fur, although opinions differ with respect to the method of slaughter. It usually encompasses inflicting harm for personal amusement or to fulfill zoosadistic impulses. Diverging viewpoints are held by jurisdictions throughout the world.

Since 1990 captive elephants have killed 43 people. Elephants are peaceful animals, and this suggests that their treatment and cruel training techniques cause the animal to suffer and act in defence.
Bullfights and cockfights still exist in today's world. Bullfights in particular being incredibly gruesome and cruel, with animals being tortured and having spears thrown into their backs

There have been several investigations into their inhumane practices. Tragically, Sea World is responsible for thirty-six unnatural orca deaths since 1971 (“Lives Stolen”). Some of the causes include diseases, stillbirth complications, and infections (“Lives Stolen”). None of these orcas died from old age. All these deaths occurred due to conditions of their captivity. Wild orcas have an average lifespan of thirty to fifty years, but in captivity the oldest orca was only twenty-six years old (“Lives Stolen”). These horrors only accounts for one species out of 6,126 species housed in all zoos (“Zoo Statistics”). Zoos are not only unsafe for animals, but also for humans. Over the past twenty-six years, 256 injuries have occurred from animal attacks (Romain). Of those injuries, thirty-three deaths have been reported (Romain). The injuries and deaths are of both the animal trainers and audience. Zoos practice an unmoral act to reduce attacks, they force antipsychotic medication down the throats of those animals to keep them more docile. Medication is not ethical, instead, animals should remain in their natural habitats, not pinned up in close proximity to people. Since animals are not in their natural homes, they perform unnatural habits such as self-abuse, pacing, swaying, boredom, and stress-induced behavior. Unlike in the zoo, animals out in…

Animal cruelty is a very severe issue. It happens all over the world, it can happen to any kind of animal, A farm animal, a pet, or even a wildlife animal. People tend to think that animals can be treated in a bad way because they aren’t “humans.” An animal is supposed to be treated as anyone would be treated in a good way and respectfully, they do have feelings just like we all do. Although animals aren’t human beings we all have the right to be treated equally. Animal abusers should be punished in a very serious manner; there should be consequences for mistreating an animal.…

Why are some children inspired to behave this way? Most behaviors are either learned or mimicked, so who is influencing these children? Perhaps their parents have the same attitude, or even sadly perhaps the children are on the other end of the brutality, just acting out what has already been done to them? Animal abuse can be an indicator of the likelihood of future acts of violence. Abusers and children who witness abuse may become desensitized to violence and may lose the ability to empathize with victims.…

The first time I heard about the topic “Animal Abuse” come up was really sad. PETA came to one of the livestock shows and were trying to tell us what we were doing wrong, but in reality we were treating the animals with love and respect. I have participated in all of these events and have seen how the animals get treated. I believe there is nothing wrong with the way they get treated. Most animals actually get treated better than some humans do. There are many society practices that people believe are cruel to animals but are not. Rodeos, showing livestock, and factory farms do not show animal cruelty.…

Animal abusement is when people hurt animals on purpose. One form of animal abusement is dogfighting. Dogfighting is a gambling sport where two trained and bred dogs, fight to the death in a dirt with surrounding walls of wood. Over 16,000 dogs die per year from dog fighting only. Results can be severe bruising, deep puncture wounds and broken bones says humanesociety.org. Dogs often die of blood loss, shock, dehydration. One former dogfighter said “Miss Rufus spent most of the rest of the fight on her back and Bandit broke her other front leg high up in the shoulder, as well as one of her back legs, in the knee joint. The only leg she didn’t break she chewed all to h*ll. She had literally scalped Miss Rufus, tearing a big chunk of skin off the top of her head alongside one ear." according to humanesociety.org. Also children are present to these fights which is a bad influence to those kids and tells them that it is okay to abuse animals. Illegal drugs and firearms are found being sold at these events and even homicide is happening at these events. Dogs who are training for these fights are baited on running on a treadmill with an animal in a cage, some ears cut off (For other animals to not latch on) , dogs are injected with steroids, and food is injected with roach poison (A way to kill cockroaches) to make him taste…

Animal abuse is a topic that most people are aware of in this day and age. But to clarify this is not going to be a speech appealing to the pity of Sarah McLachlan's song during animal cruelty commercials. Believe me this topic is truly sad, but its gets worse when you look into the current problems. I will elaborate on what is currently being done. The SPCA is a very large benefactor in stopping animal abuse as many of you probably know by their numerous commercials asking for donations and public awareness but they cannot take this entire burden on their shoulders alone. The type of animal abuse I would like talk about is specific to farm animals. This is a particular topic that many people do not consider. The example i am going to use first is the life of a cow and then elaborate on chickens. A female cow on a dairy farm is repetitively impregnated, again, and again for the production of milk. Hundreds of cows residing on thousands of dairy farms across america are artificially inseminated to constantly produce milk for our consumption. After a time of nine months the cow gives birth to a calf, within hours or a day the calf is taken from the mom and transported to a veal…

Everyday animals are being taken advantage of and being brutally abused. They are beaten, kept in cages, and enslaved just for a person’s own amusement (www.peta.org). Humans like to have freedom but yet they have no problem locking animals away because they don’t feel like dealing with them. The law sees passive and active abuse as illegal but they don’t have strict consequences that follow. Passive abuse is when the crime is less intentional and active is doing it intentionally to cause pain upon an animal (www.pet-abuse.com). Why should animals have to endure this cruel torture? What did they do to deserve this? I believe animals should be more protected under the law and not just thrown around like garbage.…

To clarify, animal cruelty or animal abuse/neglect is classified as inflicting suffering or damage upon a non-human animal for purposes other than self-defense or survival. Examples of such abuse are hunters who leave their traps and the animals caught suffer for days before succumbing to exposure, shock, bleeding to death, and death by other predators. These traps can also capture “non-target” animals such as endangered species and dogs and they die in the place of the prey intended. Also for our clothes such as gloves and leather clothing, the animals are skinned our boiled alive for the material to be completely durable. Eighteen red foxes are killed to make fur coats and fifty five minks are killed just to make one mink coat. Also, more than half the fur in the U.S comes from China who bludgeoned, hanged, and bled to death many cats and dogs for their fur (113 Facts About Animal Cruelty). How many animals have died for…

Animal cruelty has been a problem for many years, but also a major topic all over the United States. Over the years there has been people who have been trying to stop the cruelty to of these innocent animals. For example, Peter Singer and his book Animal Liberation, which caused the movement in 1975 to experience a veritable organizational explosion ( Beers 3). Just imagine how many animals are fighting for their life because of their heartless owners who believe it is okay for them to treat an animal aggressively as if their life didn’t matter. These animals are neglected, beaten, and are forced to survive. Animals should receive the same respect as humans. They are capable of thinking and feeling just the same way we do, so they deserve respect. These animals shouldn’t have to feel pain, which is caused by humans. Animals are not stones, they are able to feel and suffer (Cohen 3). Animal right consists of cruel and unusual abuse to another living being in the United States, because of them being used for experiments, getting killed for their fur and being used in fights.…

We all have an idea of what animal cruelty is but how much are you truly aware of this harmful abuse? Everyday animals are being beaten, neglected, and forced to struggle for survival. They are sometimes left in unsanitary conditions with no food or water, they have little hope as they live their days without the compassion they deserve. Animal Abuse Registry

Throughout history, it has been proven that animal abusers are most likely linked to other crimes. A source says, “Speculation regarding a possible link between violence toward animals and violence toward people can be traced back as far as writings from philosophers in the fourteenth century” (Campbell 278). A perfect example would be the famous serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer. The source also says Jeffrey Dahmer, “murdered and cannibalized at least seventeen people from 1978 through 1991. A subsequent investigation revealed that he captured and tortured many animals before graduating to acts that involved killing humans” (Campbell 272). If a registry had existed back then, authorities could have arrested him sooner or even prevented the barbarous murders from happening. Often times, this type of criminal begins by abusing defenseless animals and then progressing to more vicious acts of abuse towards humans.…

Animal cruelty can be anywhere and done by anyone. Many people think of animals, especially cats and dogs, as disposable. They get a puppy for the children for Christmas only to realize it is a lot of work that the children are not ready for. They forget to feed and water it, don 't take it for walks, and don 't take it outside to use the bathroom. The solution, abandon it or just take it to the humane society. They 'll get another when the kids are older. An animal that is used to being taken care of by humans cannot fend for itself when it is dumped. It slowly starves or gets attacked by other animals. Many people will shoot stray animals with bbs to chase them away from their property. The animal becomes hurt or aggressive…
