Anglo Saxon Boast
Anglo-Saxon Boast
Salutations auditors, hear me.
I am the astute descendant of Martha and John and the imposing model of two callows, puckish boys.
My superlative childhood was engulfed with the colors of my parent’s motherland, the aroma of family cooked meals, on a lukewarm summer nights, and with my household walls jam-packed with melodious tempos.
My oddly hazy adulthood entailed of incalculable hours painfully tackling books, constantly contemplating on the completion of the cruelty.
Now, allow me drape your ears with my dear dexterity,
And take my word that all shall be dumbfounded.
Today, I shall reveal my superb language proficiencies:
With godly talent, clutching new languages, Came like a breeze, as foreseeable.
Nothing is of challenge to this genius learner,
As it is sadly for the senseless societies.
For this glorious conqueror sees no boundaries,
As other weaklings do.
Needing nothing more than a few days,
To subjugate the nameless words.
Amusing all who have had the advantage to
Meet the authority of all languages,
Understanding every word articulated.
Doubt if you wish, for both you and I are mindful of
Your minute probability to ever draw close to a revered intellect.
However, do not let my mere audacity seize your insignificant enthusiasm.
For I know you can always study.

In the well-written autobiographical narrative A Summer Life (1990), Gary Soto delivers an original assembly of aspects from himself as a six-year-old child. Soto asserts the scary realization of wants triumphing over what is ethical and he uses many examples of imagery, repetition and a chosen vocabulary to sketch out the ignorance that is evident in a child’s mind. Soto’s purpose is to selectively illuminate feelings of morals, paranoia and imagination that play a leading role in the lives of young children in order to adequately contain the audience’s attention and allow them to apply their own emotions. Given the excessive importance to detail and exquisite symbolism with angels, Soto is writing to a very diverse audience that has some sort of religious or spiritual background or knowledge and it seems he may even be reaching to engage parents’ opinions on the matter.…

The sound of battle echoed from the halls of Heorot to the plains of geatland, Beowulf in all his glory was a conquering hero that was approaching his twilight years as king. As such he faced a new challenge, in his youth he fought and defeated Grendel and his mother to defend the people of Denmark and Heorot, he was now called to defend his land from this dragon. This beast which had awakened from its dormant rest and was now on a rampage to defend its treasure. These monsters shared many similarities that tie together with a unifying message. In Beowulf, the values and views of Anglo-Saxon society are reflected in the idea that both Grendel and the Dragon serve as warning that no man is immortal or god like and that we will all face judgement.…

Along with adulthood comes responsibilities that many children are incapable of underholdning until they are forced into the real world with age. Childhood is a time of youth that brings happiness and color to the world. It only lasts so long, until the adjustments of teenhood hit and adulthood follows shortly behind. How people choose to cope with this adjustment determines their future forever. The novels My Antonia by Willa Cather’s, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and Greasy Lake by T.C Boyle all relate to each other under this broad topic, through transition from childhood into adulthood. Each author has chosen a significant way of explaining each character’s journey to adulthood from learning life experiences. There are various different…

For seventeen years, I called it home. For seventeen years I lived a life surrounded by adoring family members. Now, this is all a distant memory. It was the house in which my life became estranged: trying to hide from the realms of reality while escaping into the fantasy in which I belonged. Now, each time I picture it, it taunts me. It has become a house that beholds my true nightmares……

At first it seemed as if my summer was never going to end. I was spending up to eight hours a day learning material. I had made friends around my grandparents neighborhood, which made my time miserable. Not to mention they lived next to a beautiful park. My parents were insistent on me spending my time with my books, which ultimately payed off in the end. At the end of summer I was reading two…

I yearned for that time when i had not been so alone. I became impatient with books. I wanted experience more immediate. I feared the library’s silence. I silently scorned the gray, timid faces around me. I grew to hate the growing pages of dissertation on genre and renaissance literature. (In my mind i heard relatives laughing as they tried to make sense of its title.) I wanted something i couldn’t say exactly what. I told myself that i wanted a more passionate life. And a life less thoughtful. And above all, I wanted to be less…

I would be assigned books that would put me to sleep like Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry because it would have no action that I enjoyed. That’s when eighth grade happened. I saw this smart kid reading a book with a bland red cover with the title I am Number Four. At first I thought it was too advanced and boring so I didn’t bother reading it. Until that summer I went to the library and saw the book under the “Most Read” section and I gave it a shot. I could see why that kid wouldn’t put that book down during class. It made me feel so many emotions I’ve never felt before over a book and I couldn’t stop reading the series, again I wouldn’t do my homework and my parents would get mad because I would read too much for once! I have recently just finished all the books in the series up to this point and I’m waiting to get my hands on the one that just recently came out. I have read this series several times because I just thought it was so…

Every night either my mom or my dad would lay down next to me, gently rubbing my back or tracing my face, and sing me a very specific song as I would fall asleep. It is one of those songs that when one hears it in a crowded place one has to stop what they are doing and reminisce. It is a song that, if asked, one could sing completely through and not miss a beat. It is a song that when one grows old and is asked by their children or grandchildren or great-grandchildren their fondest memory of their youth, the answer is always that.…

The Anglo-Saxons worshiped several gods and goddesses, for instance, they worshiped Balder, God of Immortality, and Tiw, God of War. To them, these Gods and what the Gods/Goddesses represented were extremely important to them. Just like children in today's world who look up to a hero in a movie, like Superman, because they view him as a role model. In a time period that involved a lot of fighting, the Anglo-Saxons wanted a king who was strong and brave, just like the Gods they worshiped. In today's society, we look for the same qualities in our leaders, just in different circumstances.…

My life sounds like a lot of things, the sound of my kitten making strange noises because she doesn’t meow, the sound of my brothers chasing each other up the stairs, and the sound of my entire family having dinner at my house for a special occasion. But, those aren’t the only sounds. I have grown up in a household where music has always existed. In every car ride there was always music. That's what I remember most about my childhood, is the music that we listened too. There were memories that had nothing to do with them of course, but there are many small memories that are centered around a certain song that we'd all dance and sing to. The song itself isn't what's special, it's the memories that go along with it.…

There is no place like mi casa. After a long day of school or a tiring session of work, the one place I can surely count on is home. Deep in the outskirts of Miami Gardens, this relaxing getaway destination awaits. While not the fanciest nor extravagant, my house is a convenient three bedroom apartment in the residency of Walden Pond. The building is beige with firebrick red stairs and a faded grey roof. The stairs are firm, and have rust stains due to weathering. Walking into the apartment, the aroma of Glade air freshener greets you before the people do. The walls are an orange-brown color, and immediately upon entry there are plaques and awards for my siblings showing their accomplishments in school. A glass table with flowery boutique sits…
