Anemia Case Study Essay
Anemia is a disease state that is characterized by a reduction of hemoglobin (Hb) or volume of red blood cells (RBC’s). The reduction in Hb or RBC’s leads to diminished oxygen carrying ability of the blood. Many forms of anemia exist – the anemias discussed will be relevant to our patient, JJ, based on her signs/symptoms and past medical history (PMH). Anemia can be classified based on the appearance or size of the RBC. The size of the RBC can be determined by either calculating the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of the RBC based on hematocrit and

The general presentation of anemia includes, but is not limited to: fatigue, dizziness, weakness, shortness of breath, pale color of skin, cold feet and hands, and irregular heartbeat. Our patient JJ, presents to the clinic two weeks postpartum for a well-baby visit, with complaints of being fatigued and having a “difficult time bouncing back from the delivery”. Though fatigue can be attributed to numerous disease states, JJ is at risk for developing anemia because she delivered her baby via caesarean section (C-section) and discontinued taking

These values are compared to accepted reference ranges to find abnormal values. According to JJ’s lab values, her RBC’s, Hgb and Hct are below the lower end of the reference ranges for all three values. These objective data provide evidence that JJ is anemic. To further classify the anemia and help determine the underlying cause, the MCV can be calculated by using the Hct and RBC values. It is determined that JJ’s MCV is 85 fL/cell, which is within the reference range of normocytic anemia (81-99 fL/cell). As mentioned above, one of the causes of normocytic anemia is acute blood loss. Since her PMH does not mention chronic disease or any other condition that would result in blood loss, the evidence suggests that JJ’s anemic condition is possibly due to acute blood loss during her

In early 2013 I had been sick almost every day for two months, and decided to go to Bellevue Hospital for a physical exam. That evening I was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia, and a low chance of survival. It occurs when the bone marrow stops making a sufficient amount of healthy blood cells. As I went through the treatments I kept learning about the lab results and found out about the field of clinical laboratory science. I quickly became fascinated about the profession. The more I learned about it, the more I felt drawn to pursuing a career in clinical laboratory science. It took two years to get my aplastic anemia under control, and soon after I learned that York College offers a degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, and is nationally accredited. I was, and still am, grateful to York College for providing the major which I have been passionate about.…

Sickle Cell Anemia is a hereditary disease that changes the smallest and most important components of the body. A gene causes the bone marrow in the body to make sickled shapes, when this happens; it causes the red blood cell to die faster. This is what causes Hemolytic Anemia. Older children and adults with sickle cell disease may experience a few complications, or have a pattern of ongoing problems that shorten their lives. The most common and serious complications of sickle cell disease are anemia, pain, fatigue, and organ failure. Today there are many alternatives and opportunities that a sickle cell patient may consider. One outlined in this paper is the Hydroxyurea method.…

person whose blood is low in red blood cells has anemia. Red blood cells carry oxygen (O2) to tissues and organs throughout the body and enable them to use the energy from food. Without oxygen, these tissues and organs—particularly the heart and brain—may not do their jobs as well as they should. For this reason, a person who has anemia may tire easily and look pale. Anemia may also contribute to heart problems.…
