• 20% of adults aged 18-24 don’t go to school, not military, no job, don’t have high school degree; US average is 15%, they are engaged in self defeating behavior (crime, alcohol abuse, drugs),
• LA is ranked 50th is childhood deaths, 34 out of 1000 die in LA,
• 48th in child poverty,
• 28% of children live under the poverty line, average is 18-20%
• ranked 46th in violent crime, when there is a problem they don’t work it out
• 47th in motor vehicle death
• 48th in obesity
• 46th in heart decease
• overall health stats in LA is 50th , there are only 50 states, we are at the bottom, there is a need for wellness/health education in LA try to use the word wellness instead of health because health has more of a physical part; wellness involves 6 dimensions, in each dimension you have to reach a potential,
• 1st dimension: physical health (sick and go to doctor, go to gym and work out, etc.)
• 2nd dimension: emotional/mental health * (most important dimension because if you don’t feel good mentally (does not mean happy, but rational, grounded) you cannot take care of yourself, enhance yourself,
• 3rd dimension: intellectual health: read newspapers daily, watch news daily, knowing what is going on in the world around you
• 4th dimension: spiritual wellness: believe in sth., even if you believe that there is no religion or higher power, just believe in sth
• 5th dimension: social wellness: seeking and finding romance, deciding what type of person you are, what you stand for, what type of people do you want to be around, what you can and cannot tolerant, aligning with certain
