As they grew larger, these villages began to evolve.”(Ancient Greece) Just like other countries, Ancient Greece did not start off as an advanced civilization, but, over time, Ancient Greece became more advanced and wealthy. Some essential characteristics that helped Ancient Greece become more advanced was its type of government, its religion, and its art and architecture. Hercules became a well-known character that taught people about heroes, and how people should do good things. Even today, in the modern world, movies have been made about Hercules. One way that architecture is still influential today is through the materials we use to build modern buildings. The Ancient Greeks used, wood, bricks, limestone, marble, and metal, which we still use today. Another part of the Ancient Greek architecture that we still use today is columns. One example of a building that has columns is the Lincoln memorial, which was influenced by the style of the Greek Doric Temple. The columns of the Lincoln memorial represent the number of states at the time of Lincoln’s death. At the time of Lincoln’s death there were 36 states, so there are 36 columns that surround the memorial. The Lincoln memorial is also built out of limestone and marble which was used in the Ancient Greek buildings. The U.S. Capital is another example of a building in modern times that was influenced by the Greek architectural designs because it has Doric columns just like the Lincoln memorial does. With the columns and the triangular roof, the British museum has incorporated some of the Greek

The political system of Ancient Greece underwent several changes over the past few decades all tying in with individualism. The biggest change in the political system of Ancient Greece was how they went from a monarchy to an aristocracy around the 6th century B.C.E., to a democracy. In the Agora stood tall the government buildings where citizens would come together to ratify decisions of leaders. Soon, this agora would be turned into a marketplace, because traders always come to crowds to sell things. (Bulliet 105) During this time period, a monarchy still ruled over Ancient Greece until they entered the Age of Colonization from 750 to 550 B.C.E. Due to the successful warfare campaigns, Greece produced wealth very quickly and the percentage of middle class people rose. Soon afterward, Greece shifted by a land ruled by nobles to a money-based economy controlled by the middle class which led to an aristocracy led by tyrants (Butler, FC19: The Rise of Greek Democracy (c.750-500 BCE)). The tyrants who held power illegally were captured and ejected and the political system shifted over to a democratic system. Furthermore, the shift caused by individualism influenced other civilizations around the Mediterranean such as Carthage and…

Introduction: In order to understand the impact of Greek mythology on Western culture one must understand what Greek mythology itself is. Greek Mythology is the belief, tales, and stories of ancient gods who ruled the ancient world as well as heroes who challenged the gods or some who fought for them. Many of these tales include moral stories and shaped humanistic values of what and what not to do. The ancient Greece Empire was located around the Mediterranean Sea and touched parts of what was called minor Asia (Howstuffwork 2010). In these times the belief was that ancient gods were a part of everyday life. Supposedly the gods rules all aspect of life such as the production of food, domestic life, war and social life such as fortune and love. The people mad sacrifices to these gods to “please” them and many died fighting for these gods, which no one actually saw because of their home on Mount Olympus. Greek mythology was more than just stories to these people it was actually a religion, which formed and shaped political nature of Ancient Greece as well. Greek mythology attempts to explain the origins of the world and the reasons for occurrences in the world. The time period of when Greek mythology began is not really confirmed it is estimated around 800 BC, but there have been accounts of earlier pottery and artifacts which show images of the gods. These mythical stories have stood against the sands of time and even today are used in modern language and societies.…

The Greeks went through many, many years of colonizing, invasions and other rough times before they were able to become the envy of the ancient world. Early Greek historians say that the first civilized Greeks were the Minoans that sailed from the island of Crete to settle other islands off the coast of the mainland that would later be called The Peloponnesian Peninsula. After about 600 years the Minoans were wiped out by the invasions of barbarians and tidal waves that destroyed much of their civilization. After that came the Mycenaean Age in which the Mycenaeans settled the Peloponnesian Peninsula. The Mycenaean’s created many warlike kingdoms that governed themselves. These were called city-states. These city-states would be heavily fortified because they were constantly at war with each other trying to gain more land for their own individual kingdoms. These kingdoms shared the same language and they also worshiped the same gods. About 600 years after the start of the Mycenaean Age, Greek barbarians from the north called the Dorian’s invaded causing the Greek Dark Age. During this Dark Age the great city-states and kingdoms of the early age were destroyed, writing and technology were lost, and there was constant warfare. After 300 years of this Dark Age that encompassed turmoil and confusion, Greek civilization was reestablished. This age was known as the Hellenistic…

Greek civilization, in many ways, was the most advanced population of it's time. The Greeks have created a great stir in modern day values, events, and philosophy, and they were just getting warmed up. The question, "What did the Greeks contribute to modern society", was posed, and I will begin to answer. The Greeks created a vast religious system, filled with heroes, gods, villains, monsters, and more. This has fascinated us, and has even influenced some of our brands of clothing, Nike for example (Nike being the goddess of victory). Speaking of Nike, the Olympic games were held in celebration of her, and was often seen as the main event. She was held in the hand of the statue of Athena during the games, and the olive wreaths were actually…

hat "Rome wasn't built by the Greek in a day" (Dean J. Argyris)." After doing some research, I have come to find Greek influences Roman society and thought through their architecture and religion. There are many more similarities between the cultures that have influences Rome. Greek Empire had lose to the Roman Republic, therefore, they took many of the Greek citizens. Which, they had to, as a whole, conform to some of the Greek culture for them to be able to adapt better. I feel that they wanted them to be comfortable. The Romans even gave the Greek slaves jobs as teachers for the Roman children. Another example, is there religion. They had a lot of similarities in their God's. Although, different names, the God's in each culture had the same…
