Ancient Greece had a big influence on the world and how it is today. Greece lies at the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula, where the Mediterranean Sea is. In the region, mountain terrain made it so farming was limited because of the land. Because of that they turned to the Sea and became fishers, sailors, and traders to survive. The Greeks have influenced western civilizations in many areas such as government and sports. Government today is separated into three branches judicial, executive, and legislative. We got the idea of those three branches from a man named Montesquieu. Aristotle quotes “… an life guided by human is superior to any other…”(Doc 2). In this statement he means that every man is equal no matter what his social class is. This equality idea went on for a long time. People made books, speeches, plays, etc. about equality. A famous play named Antigone by Sophocles has a quote that states equality “For me. It was not Zeus who made that order. Nor do I think your orders were strong that you, a mortal man, could overrun the gods’ unwritten and unfailing laws… I know I must die… but if I left my brother dead and unburied, I’d have cause to grieve as now I grieve not.”(Doc 6). Democracy was also a major thing back in ancient Greece. Equality and democracy were popular in Greece. Pericles gives a speech to Athenians and it states “ Our plan of government favors the many instead of the few: that’s is why it is called a democracy… While every citizen has equal opportunity to serve the public… Nor do we discriminate the poor. A man may serve his country no matter how low his position on the social scale.”(Doc 3). Sports were also a major part of Greece and its history. Romans built coliseums to entertain the people. In these colossal buildings they held events that included slaughter and murder to arouse the crowd. These events included traps, slaves, gladiators, vicious animals, and many

One thing that the ancient Greek affected western civilization is politics. It was the Greeks who developed a democracy, they were the very first. Pericles stated that he wanted all citizens to have an equal opportunity to serve the public. In both the US democracy and the Greeks democracy, political privilege can be use by citizens. (Doc.3). An example of a political privilege can be use by citizens in Greek was that laws were voted upon and to able to nominate by the assembly of all citizens. In the US when citizens are 18 and older they are granted the right to vote. In the US most of the democratic system that the government uses is either identical or very similar to the Ancient Greek system.…

In terms of architecture, both classical Greece and Rome are responsible for almost all advancements made in Western civilization. Ancient Greece’s architectural style can be separated into three defined orders: the Doric Order, the Ionic Order and the Corinthian Order, all which had a profound effect on Western architecture. They are best known for their supreme structures of temples, such as the Second Temple of Hera at Paestum, the Parthenon, and the Temple of Athena Nike. Even more importantly the architects of classical Rome made even more impactful innovations. The Romans were great reformers and they quickly adopted new construction techniques, used new materials, and uniquely combined existing techniques with creative design to produce…

Greek civilization, in many ways, was the most advanced population of it's time. The Greeks have created a great stir in modern day values, events, and philosophy, and they were just getting warmed up. The question, "What did the Greeks contribute to modern society", was posed, and I will begin to answer. The Greeks created a vast religious system, filled with heroes, gods, villains, monsters, and more. This has fascinated us, and has even influenced some of our brands of clothing, Nike for example (Nike being the goddess of victory). Speaking of Nike, the Olympic games were held in celebration of her, and was often seen as the main event. She was held in the hand of the statue of Athena during the games, and the olive wreaths were actually…

Socrates and Aristotle were both Greek philosophers who contributed philosophies. Socrates believed that all people contained real knowledge within them and that self critical examination was needed to bring this knowledge out. Socrates once stated, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” In this philosophical idea, Socrates is suggesting that an individual, who chooses to not think about their own actions, does not truly care about their own life. Aristotle believed in the concept of examining individual objects and being able to perceive their form and establish universal principles. These principles did not exist as a separate higher world of reality beyond material things, but were apart of things themselves. Aristotle has stated, “Since human reason is the most godlike part of human nature, a life guided by human reason is superior to any other….For man, this is the life of reason, since the faculty of reason is the distinguishing characteristic of human beings.” Aristotle is suggesting that an individual who logically thinks about their actions before acting on them, are more superior than those who act without thinking because thinking before acting causes less harm and it shows a person who cares for both themselves and others. These philosophical ideas about self examination on thoughts and actions have come a long way. All individuals think in new and advanced ways and frequently think about both consequences and benefits before acting upon ideas.…

The geography of Ancient Greece had positive and negative effects on Ancient Greek Civilization. The mountains that cover Greece have acted as a barrier to Greece, and it separated Greece instead of uniting it. The Ionian Sea, Aegean Sea, Thracian Sea, Sea of Crete, Gulf of Corinth, and Mediterranean Sea surrounded Greece. They acted as a highway for Greece in order to reach other nations as efficiently as possible, as well as providing Greece with a source of income. Clearly, geography shaped Greek Civilization.…

Ancient Greek culture had major influences on today’s culture; some of these influences include mathematics, government, art and architecture; they even did research in the field of medicine. Many cultures and religions have adapted their ideas from the ancient Greeks. Without the influences of the ancient Greeks our society wouldn’t be the way it is today. The Greek culture lasted from around 776 BCE to 146 BCE (though it is argued to have begun around 1000 BCE), during this time they invented many technologies and refined old technologies. These things are what caused the ancient Greek culture to be such a powerful influence on western society today.…
