Martinique was called Madina and inhabited by Caribs, before Christopher Columbus sighted the island. Three decades later, the first party of French settlers landed on the northwest side of the island. A fort was built, and they settled into what later became the capital, St. Pierre. A year later, a decree authorizing the use of African slaves in the French West Indies was signed. The settlers quickly colonized with the help of slave labor, and constructed the Fort-de-France. Caribs were soon kicked out of the island, and the British took control of Martinique. Martinique prospered under British occupation as they sold only sugar to the British. This occupation allowed Martinique to be away from the French Revolution. After France gained stability, it re-established itself in Martinique, but sugarcane plantation began to waver and aristocrat plantation owners lost their political influence. Schoelcher, a French cabinet minister, who convinced government to sign the Emancipation Proclamation, ended slavery in the Indies. In May 8, 1902, Mont Pelée volcano erupted and destroyed St. Pierre and claimed 30,000 of lives. Shortly after, the capital was moved to Fort-de-France. In 1946, Martinique became an Overseas Department of France, and later it assimilated into the political fold as a Department of France. In 2007, Hurricane Dean wiped out the banana crop, and left damages of 240 million and killed 2 people. And some of the hotels have shut their door due to the hurricane, it is uncertain if they will reopen again.…

While Arab and Malay sailors knew of Mauritius as early as the 10th century CE and Portuguese sailors first visited in the 16th century, the island was first colonized in 1638 by the Dutch. Mauritius was populated over the next few centuries by waves of traders, planters and their slaves, indentured laborers, merchants, and artisans. The island was named in honor of Prince Maurice of Nassau by the Dutch, who abandoned the colony in 1710.…

In a post-world war period, Mauritius has made a transition from being an under-developed economy towards being an upper-middle economy which is today the best African governed country according to the Ibrahim Index of African Governance. However, until the 1980’s Mauritius was affected by several issued and the decision of the United Kingdom to grant independence to Mauritius in 1968 and to stop granting financial support was not a good sign for the future of Mauritius. In 1961, James Edward Meade a Nobel Prize winner in Economics predicted a disastrous future for Mauritius in his report to the Government of Mauritius. Out of his report the following is the most striking part which clearly condemns Mauritius to a disastrous future: “Heavy population pressure must inevitably reduce real income per head below what it might otherwise be. That surely is bad enough in a community that is full of political conflict. But if in addition, in the absence of other remedies, it must lead either to unemployment (exacerbating the scramble for jobs between Indians and Creoles) or to even greater inequalities (stocking up still more the envy felt by the Indian and Creole underdog for the Franco-Mauritian top dog), the outlook for peaceful development is poor” . However, a sound policy making system in Mauritius has helped to develop an upper-middle income economy with a high level of Human Development Index, High per capita income of around $4000 and a stable political sphere as Mauritius is a full democracy despite being part of the African Continent where Democracy is not much present. Thus, Mauritius has become a model for many countries which try to emulate the feat of the “Mauritian miracle” as they try to adopt some of the policies adopted in Mauritius. Therefore, this paper will critically examine some major factors and issues which are the source for the creation of major policies in Mauritius since World War 2 to modern times.…

"God first made Mauritius and from it, he created Paradise." This saying from Mark Twain praises the natural beauty of Mauritius. The island’s landscapes can be mesmerizing to the eyes of everyone, but Mauritius’ culture is not any less. However, it would be too simple to classify Mauritius as having one culture as so many unique and distinctive parts forms this whole. Going to its discovery can be a journey into some of the most fascinating and refined thousands year old ancestral traditions. It is made up of the different customs and traditions of those who, during the last 400 years, have settled on these shores. They all have been brought and planted on the fertile Mauritian soils by colonists from Europe, slaves from Africa, indentured laborers from India and Pakistan (before partition) and migrants from China. These people brought with them what they have been venerating in their country of origin; their tradition and cultures. This essay will take a look at how the migrants helped shaping the language, the food culture and the folklore culture in Mauritius.…

Mauritius is a sovereign democratic state and is a member of the United Nations, of the Commonwealth and of the "Francophonie". Historically, Mauritius basically remained an uninhabited island until the 17th century when it was colonised firstly by the Dutch, then by the French and then subsequently by the British. Mauritius was under French rule until 1814 when it became British, but still kept its French laws and customs. Whilst the substantive laws, e.g. the Civil Code, the Criminal Code and the Commercial Code remained French, the English judges presiding in the Mauritian courts preferred English procedure, which was familiar to them. Thus historically, English law gradually grafted itself on French law to supplement the former. More modern legislation in the fields of company, banking, finance, offshore, taxation, shipping and intellectual property are of English origin. In 1968, Mauritius became independent and Parliament enacts the laws. In specific cases, the power is delegated to ministers to make regulations and the country became a Republic within the British Commonwealth in 1992.…
