Analyzing Ray Bradbury's 'All Summer In A Day'

n the short story, “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury it describes how there is endless rain and the sun can only come up once every seven years on the planet Venus. One nine year old girl stands out from the rest, Margot. She remembers the sun from the days she has been on Earth. She had been the one who was born on Earth and had only moved to Venus five years ago. The other kids don’t remember it at so they are extremely jealous of Margot. This causes them to be really mean to her. Jealousy from the other children on Venus leads to harsh treatment, harassment, and discrimination, this is shown when she is bullied, locked up, and under depression.

She is very depressed and sad because of the rain and the other kids bullying her.” And once, a month ago, she refused to shower in the showering rooms, had clutched her hands to her ears and over her head, screaming the water mustn't touch her head.” This portrays that is getting more and more depressed because of the endless rain coming down. Another way this is shown is when she is bullied by the other kids.Defenders may say that they offered to play but she just refused. This is not true because she is already depressed and is just never in the mood. This causes the other kids to eventually do even worse things.
Another example is when they lock her up right before the sun is going to come out, “‘Hey, everyone, let’s put her up and bore her in a closet before the teacher comes back!”’(Bradbury, 1954) This shows that their jealousy takes over. Everyone thinks that she needs to be put in a closet because she already remembers it and they don’t. She is rejected on and later on they lie and say that everyone is there, “‘Are we all here?” “Yes !”’.(Bradbury, 1954). They lock her up and lie just so she couldn't see the sun. This means they are jealous and want to see for themselves what the sun is
