Analyzing Patient Conditions
I’m glad your mother is well! I can only imagine the amount of complaints or concerns a nurse will get in one shift. I understand, their job is to investigate the concern and assure the patient condition has not deteriorate. We as family must take their word and assume everything is well. However, your concerns regarding your mother’s mental stability was an important one. I would had preferred a doctor to assess her condition and assure you that she was just having side effects of the anesthesia.
I had surgery and was given narcotics. I told the nurse, the medication made me feel anxious and extremely scared of everything. She ignored me and continue to give me shots. Due to my side effects, my stay in the hospital exceeded another 3 days.

Miranda, you did wonderful in this situation. We have all gone through situations like this, and I think as long as we remain nurses situations like this will keep arising. Being an advocate for the patient will never be easy, but we as nurses must keep persevering just like you did. If we allow ourselves to be intimidated by doctors, then our pledge of being a patient advocate will be null. Masters (2017) states “the ability of nurses to think critically and make sound clinical judgments is essential to providing safe, competent, and quality care” (p. 216). You did exactly what was required of you as a nurse, and I believe if you had not been persistent to the point of getting a cardiologist on the case, the outcome would have been dire…

When I was a young nurse it seemed like problems I saw were continually put on a back burner or not treated fairly. It’s important to be accountable for mistakes. I have worked on a surgical floor for 16 years. On occasion we will be pulled to another unit if they are really short. I was pulled to an oncology floor when I had been an RN for about 3 years. I was not familiar with the chemo drugs and their schedules. But my med sheet had times listed when to hang certain things so I didn’t ask the charge nurse but went about hanging my drugs. Later in the day the oncologist saw what happened and threw a huge fit. I wasn’t told specifically what I’d done wrong but just that I was incompetant and he didn’t want me ever taking care of his patients again. That was hard to hear because most of the time I was told I was great to be around and a great asset to my unit. I asked the charge nurse what I done wrong. She said certain things weren’t compatible and that I had put the patient at risk but she also told me not to worry, she wouldn’t “report” me. She just kept poo pooing me and told me she would take care of things. It literally seemed like everything was just swept under a rug. Later after my shift was over I went back down to my floor and talked with my clinical educator about what happened. She used to work oncology so I knew she would understand that units procedures. She was upset that I was assigned a chemo patient to…

I chose nursing as my profession because of my mother and other factors. My mother was an influence because early this year she was in the hospital for two weeks and during that period I only saw the doctor thrice. The nurses where the ones doing everything, so I felt they were the ones who nursed her back to health. The other deciding factors were: variety of places for jobs whether in the public, private, or community setting; the opportunity to learn new things since no day is ever the same; the opportunity to work with other health professionals; nurses will always be needed; nursing offers specialty areas, and the opportunity to be a traveling nursing.…

As patient’s advocates, nurses need to provide care that is qualitative, safe and at the same time beneficial to the patients. My patient was a cancer patient that was going through much pain and at the same time, the doctors were worried about the adverse effect of too much pain medication being administered to this patient which is liver damage and dependency on narcotics. On the other hand, the patient’s cancer has advanced to stage II and her chances of survival were very minimal. In this case, palliative care would have been better for the patient but the patient and her family members were still in denial of the outcome of the patient’s condition and refused to accept hospice care. If I did not act the way I did, the hospital would have been reported to the ombudsman and would have been under…

The whole documentary focused on a young boy who believes that he was reincarnated- that he was a Barra boy. Cameron is a five year old who lives in Glasgow, Scotland, who claims to have lived before his current life ever since he started talking. He talked about things such as living in a huge white house near the beach where he could see airplanes landing at sea, living with his 7 siblings, mom, and dad whose name was Shane Robertson. Cameron also talks about owning black and white Border collie. His mother, Norma, has been anxious and concerned about her son’s memories and becomes curious and questions why he had such memories. She was not convinced that Cameron was influenced by television shows of by what he hears from other people and claims that her son was never exposed to television shows about Barra and they have never been there. Her son would continually say particulars about his life back then and Norma soon decides to investigate her son’s situation and find a rational explanation to her son’s memories by consulting a child psychologist. The family travelled to Barra, and soon most details begin to fit such as airplanes landing at sea and a family called Stevenson owned the house. It was a struggle for the family to find the house near the beach, but somehow they managed to locate the house Cameron has spoken off. However, instead of questions being answered, more and more questions begin to form. Norma then finds a relative of the Stevenson family who lived in the house and confirmed that there was an actual black and white dog however the name and death of the father did not match.…

During a recent placement in an Endoscopy day unit, I met Mrs Smith who was attending to undergo a Gastroscopy. She had a history of acid reflux and had been referred for the procedure as an outpatient but had not attended her Pre-Admission Clinic appointment. Upon her arrival, myself and a staff nurse took baseline observations and spoke with the patient to ensure that she had fasted from midnight which was necessary for the procedure. On advising her on anaesthesia, I informed her that she had two options. The first was a throat spray to numb the local area and she could leave almost immediately afterwards. The second was sedation and analgesia in the form of Fentanyl and Midazolam which would be given through intravenous cannulation; however, she would have to remain with us for several hours post procedure. Mrs Smith began to panic and became quite irate. She stated that she had been under the impression that she would be given a general anaesthetic and would be asleep the entire time. I explained that the doctor required her to be awake for this procedure and that general anaesthetic was not an option.…

My insatiable appetite for knowledge coupled with compassion and commitment to nursing shape my desire to pursue a DNP in nurse anesthesia. Clinical rotations in OR as a close observer during an open Heart Surgery at the IMMC, while a student at the DePaul University also afforded me opportunity to see administration anesthetic drugs by a CRNA. In concretizing my interest to purse a DNP in Nurse Anesthesia, nothing can be more absolute than witnessing the births of our three children and the joy that they have brought in to my life. I saw firsthand as the nurse anesthetist administered the epidural…
