In this research project, we are evaluating two sectors from an analysis of the financial statements of five companies from each sector. One of the sectors that we will be analyzing is the financial sector. Under this sector, we are focusing on commercial banking. The top five companies for our analysis are J.P. Morgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, and Goldman Sachs. The criterion in choosing these companies is U.S. based firms ranked by the highest revenues in 2013. An important distinction that sets this industry apart from others is the heavily involvement of the government. For example, the Federal Reserve sets borrowing limits, interest rates, and how much deposits in a vault are to be held. The government has great authority, especially with fluctuations of interest rates, in the profitability of the financial sector. These banking institutions are currently regulated at the highest degree since the financial crisis of 2008. The second sector we will analyze is the airline industry. An airline is a company that provides air transport services for traveling passengers and freight. Airlines either lease or own their aircrafts that they supply these services with. Airlines take passengers across the world servicing everyone from business passengers, tourists, and business entities that use services for commerce of products. The airline industry is a service industry which is structured based on the service the airline provides, what the airline is in business to transport, and the revenue potential of the particular airline.…

Kingfisher Airlines was an Indian full-service airline established in 2003{1}. It started commercial operations, involving domestic and international flights, on 9 May 2005. On one hand, it was nominated by Skytrax as a world 5-Star Airline for the 2010 ranking period because of its excellent product and service quality{2}. On the other hand, Kingfisher Airlines had not made profit since starting operations in 2005, so it tried to reduce cost{3}. For example, from 10 April 2012, Kingfisher Airlines had suspended all international journeys. A partial lock-out happened on 1 October in the same year because of the delay payment of salaries, which eventually led to labour strike. On 20 October 2012, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) prohibited Kingfisher Airlines from flying on the grounds of potential inconvenience to the travelling public. Bangalore International Airport Limited also sued Kingfisher Airlines for the user development fee and passenger…

At a time when most developed economies shrunk, a 4.7% growth during the first quarter of 2009-10, puts India among the top-most growing nations. In spite of the global recessionary trends, India managed 6.7% economic growth in the fiscal 2009. The growth in the aviation sector is linked with the growth of GDP, which according to latest figures released in Dec 2009 has rebounded to pre-slowdown phase of nearly 8%.In recent years, with the entry of several new airlines; the aviation sector in India has undergone a major transformation. The arrival of the low-cost airlines like Air Deccan (merged with Kingfisher now), Go Air, and SpiceJet revolutionized the sector to meet the growing demand of economical and faster inter- city travel options within India. Air travel is no longer the luxury of business executives and the economically well-off. As more airlines are entering India’s domestic aviation market, it is leading to increased competition, resulting in drastic fare cuts.…

The financial agonies for Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) are seeming to become insurmountable. After being forced to massively scale down its operations and ground more than half of its fleet in the month of Feb 2012 when the IT-Dept froze its bank accounts over non-payment of tax dues, the estranged airliner has now cancelled all of its international operations and has the aviation regulator (DGCA) as well as the govt. breathing down its throat questioning the company’s ability to come up with a credible plan and revive the failing fortunes.…

Introduction: Kingfisher Airlines, a leading Indian private airline , faced a serious financial crisis in November 2011. The airline, which had not made a profit since its inception, went through debt restructuring once in March 2011 in the form of a bailout package from a consortium of 13 banks that included State Bank of India and ICICI Bank. Even after the debt restructuring and infusing of fresh capital in the form of an additional debt of Rs. 12.12 billion from the consortium of banks, the airline found itself unable to overcome the problem and reported a net loss of Rs. 7322.10 million during the first six months of the FY 2012. For FY 2011, the airline had accumulated losses of 102.74 billion and more than fifty percent of its net worth had been eroded. The cash-strapped and bleeding airline cancelled 175 flights out of the 418 allotted for the Winter Schedule, which included four international flights to Bangkok. According to the Center for Asia-Pacific Aviation (CAPA) chief executive, Kapil Kaul (Kaul), the airline urgently required capital infusion of $400 million, including an immediate $200 million to maintain its daily operations...…
