Love Has No Existence Here After reading the two short stories, Love in L.A by Dagoberto Gilb and What We Talk about When We Talk about Love by Raymond Carver, I have realized that a common feeling like ‘love’ can be painted into so many different pictures. Each one of these short stories is written by two different authors and sees ‘love’ at different angles. The character Jake in Love in L.A. has this vision of love that is more of a mockery. Then, Terri’s ex-husband in What We talk about When We Talk about Love has so much passion, but the kind of passion that can be interoperated as obsession. The lies and misconceptions of ‘love’ that Jake and Terri’s ex-husband display reveal that ‘love’ does not exist in a world filled with nothing but cruelty and evil actions.

He was threatening Terri and her current husband Mel because he essentially stole the love of his life. Mel explained that Ed made them feel like fugitives and he felt the need to protect himself with gun. Ed definitely cared for Terri because he took such extreme action with showing that he did. However, when expressing love you are not suppose to express evil and that is what Ed was do. He was contradicting his feelings. If he loved Terri so much he would have treated her with more compassion and like an angle, rather than being so violent. Terri would not have left Ed if there was true love in the relationship. Although, I do believe that feelings change and if that was the case for Terri, Ed should have been happy for Terri. Ed was so cruel…”The man tried to kill me.” Murder and love do not go hand in hand for any reason at all. Such passion as love can make people go a little crazy and do things that are out of character but Ed did not seem to seem to be acting out of character because this was the way he showed her he loved her all along. He would beat her and say ‘I love

Love is an intense feeling of deep affection, where the feeling might come from the heart or from a mysterious liquid. As two great stories “Appointment with Love” by S. I. Kishor, and “The Chaser” by John Collier, were love is seeing from two different perceptives. S. I. Kishor’s “Appointment with Love” shows the audience the deep feeling of love, and John Collier’s “The Chaser” is based on the situational irony of the unreal hope of youth as opposed to the extreme disillusion of age and experience. “Appointment with Love” and “The Chaser” are two similar stories were love takes a different path. While Kishor story elucidates the meaning of love, Collier story underscore the danger of making someone fall in love by…

Theme Of Love In The Giver

It is embedded in human nature to love; in fact, many scientific studies have proven that mankind can’t live without love. However, in the critically-acclaimed, dystopian novel The Giver, love, along with any true emotions, is ostracized. All inhabitants of the Community are identical, with no one truly loving each other, just “enjoying one another’s presence”. The protagonist, Jonas, must learn for himself what the true meaning of love is, how it affects humans, and whether expressing it is worth the trouble that follows. By developing character relationships, author Lois Lowry expresses the theme of love being a double-sided blade that can both aid and maim the wielder.…

What is love? Often enough, as a hormone-struck teenager, I am lectured on what love is not. According to my mother, father, grandmother, aunts, uncles, and every adult figure that has ever made a guest-star appearance in the long-winded romance novel that is my life, love is NOT the warm cuddly feeling I get when I see a cute boy at school. Love is NOT holding hands on the playground; is not caring an abnormal amount for a favorite pair of shoes. I feel as though a vast amount of time is spent describing the negative space of a person’s heart, and not long enough spent defining its shape. Although Pastor Ostrum follows suit with his anti-definition of what love is not, he definitely strikes a chord in my heart when he says that “love is not something we wait to have happen to us, but something we do.” Many might disagree, might argue that love is a two-way street; that in order to give we must first receive. However, in the novel “Until They Bring the Streetcars Back,” by Stanley Gordon West, Cal Gant demonstrates this principle of giving time and time again.…

What is Love? Does anyone really know the meaning of the word? Does it have a different meaning to different people? In Kipnis’s essay “Love Labors”, Laura Kipnis touches on many different aspects of love. This is a touchy subject simply because love brings out many different opinions and beliefs. Kipnis argues over the fact that in order to have a good relationship and love someone people have to be able to meet certain requirements, which are mutuality, communication, and advanced intimacy.…

In the abstract short story “Love and Other Catastrophes: A Mix Tape” by Amanda Brown, the reader orates a long list of hit love songs from the eighty’s and ninety’s. In the short story there is no imagery, similes, metaphors, allusions, or foreshadowing. However there is a particular irony with Browns’ writing style- it begins and ends with the same song. “‘All By Myself’ (Eric Carmen)” (1) and (27). Despite if Browns’ short story is a reflection of her personal love life or just her outlook on love, it is an unusual and interesting piece of literature about everyone’s favorite subject- love and tragedy.…

Dagoberto Gilb’s short story, deceiving titled “Love in L.A.”, paints a portrait of a hilarious event involving a minor car accident on the jam-packed Los Angeles freeway. When first reading the title, you automatically start making assumptions that this story has something to do with how a couple finds “Love in L.A.”. This story has nothing to do with love, in fact it has nothing to do with a minor car accident; it has more to do with our high valued thoughts which our minds fantasize and make life full of lies and illusions. We all like to fantasize and wish we had something’s we don’t necessarily have now, but Jake takes it a little too far.…

"What's Love Got to do With It?" That was Tina Turner's view of love in the late nineteen-eighties. Apparently Scott Peck, the author of The Road Less Traveled, felt the same way. Peck's view of love was a correction to what he thought everyone else thought love was. This paper will be an explanation of Peck's beliefs about love, a contrasting view on love, and my personal knowledge of Peck's beliefs.…

Rather we read Bronte, Tolstoy, Austin, or Shakespeare, there is one common thread among our favorite classic writers, and that is the theme of love. Love has been written about for centuries and for most of us, rather you are a peasant or a queen, love is something that each of us seek. We want to be swept off our feet, by that proverbial “Knight in Shining Armor,” and ride off on his white Stallion into the setting sun, to live happily ever after. We seek love to fill our hearts, and enrich our lives: “Love comforteth like sunshine after rain.” (Shakespeare)…

Nick, the narrator, sits back and observes the feedback from Mel who is confused and lost. Love is a powerful thing, it is unseen, but felt very deeply. There is a common theme of love in Kate Chopin’s “The Story of An Hour,” Raymond Carver’s “Popular Mechanics,” and Stephen King’s “The Man Who Loved Flowers.” “The Story of An Hour” is about a woman who loves her freedom, until her husband comes home taking that away from her. “Popular Mechanics” follows a couple who has fallen out of love, but their love for their baby is dangerous. “The Man Who Loved Flowers” is about a man named love in search for a woman named Norma and when someone’s not Norma he kills them. The author’s, based on these short stories, all view love as something that ultimately leads to death.…

Humanity has forever been intrigued by the bewildering power of love. Artist of all types, writers, painters, singers, philosophers, have attempted to explain the origin of love and why it is such an important part of our human lives. Looking at two important works like Pablo Neruda's 20 Love Poems and a Song of Despair and Laura Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate, the authors choose to depict stories of true love, passion and longing to portray the feeling of love. These two works go beyond realistic human feeling and events to do so, and use literary devices such as magical realism, natural imagery and exaggerated emotion in their writing. They do so…
