Analysis: What Environment Were You Raised In?
What Environment Were You Raised In? Geographically my environment spanned from as far south as Texas and as farther north as Ohio. But has always been marked by love between family, and values of honor, respect, and commitment. With little to no exemptions in a stray of these values. I was born in Ohio with the majority of my immediate family nearby. With the predominance of my mom's family in Ohio, and my dad's family in Missouri or Michigan. I have lived in the same small town of Bonner Springs, Kansas my entire life. My parents and I have always been close and I guess one could say we are a “normal” American family. My heritage derives from German, Native American, and a Bohemian background. I honestly do not know much about my ancestry except for the few things my parents and grandparents have shared with me. How I see it, I am a mix of hundreds of amazing individuals from different races, cultures and backgrounds. Residing on a farm taught me a lot about hard work, medicine, and caring for others. I always knew I wanted to be a nurse even as a small child. At a young age my grandmother entered a nursing home, so I essentially grew up watching others care for her and from then…

My move from India affected me as I was thrust into a new cultural environment. India is a highly conservative culture where traditional customs determine most things, including relationships developed outside the family set-up. On the other hand, the United States has a more liberal culture permeating different things including increased social interaction. I had to make a decision as to remain chained to my conservative Indian culture or embrace the American culture, which was my new home.…

We all had to make sacrifices. For instance, although my parents are divorced, my father was twenty to thirty minutes away as opposed to eight hours by plane. In addition, the first apartment I lived in the US, was separated by gender. Seven out of nine were females and we had to share a bedroom, a bathroom, and a closet. While the other two men had their own restroom, bedroom, and closet. In the end, having to live crowded together, my family became very close and I understood that family was very…

I firmly believe that the environment one grows up in and the people we surround ourselves with can shape who we will be for the rest of our lives. I grew up in a small neighborhood in the suburbs of a relatively big city. I enjoyed growing up in this setting because being near the city granted me many opportunities to do exciting activities – such as going to parks, nature trails and festivals – while living in a more small-scale neighborhood allowed me to grow up in a community with a strong sense of family. At first glance, we probably look like nothing more than a group of neighbors, but in reality we are much more than just neighbors. To me, these people that my parents, sisters, and I have befriended over the years are family. This close-knit group that I have been surrounded by since birth has shaped me in many ways as well as helped get me through difficult times.…
