Wilkerson constructed. But I chose this book and Isabel Wilkerson intentionally, growing up in a rural, conservative area I was blind to much of what I see now. Due to The Warmth of Other Suns, I see more grey in places that used to be distinctly black and white. There is a deep yearning in me to be an instrument in this large orchestra, to use my talents and abilities be a part of the solution, which starts in my personal relationships, within my community, etc…My ambitions are to attend graduate school and then to begin teaching or serving the community in another capacity, precisely in regards to low income areas and title one schools. Wilkerson’s work allows us to explore worldviews that shake our own, by emphasizing the unique personalities and decisions that George, Robert and Ida had made was a connecting point for me. This allowed a window into their own personal journey, into their fears, passions, motivations, etc… Once I was conscious to these individuals and Wilkerson’s personable rhetoric, I was able to gain empathy and understanding. Within Physical Education & Health there are several things I can take from Wilkerson’s work, one major aspect being, that because of her work I have a better foundation of why we are still witnessing the ramifications of racism and objectification, this provides a platform to speak out for future students, and individuals in general that have been misrepresented because of deeply flawed systemic
