the Dragon with a Boy of a Heart

"Gather around and listen well, for naught the faint of heart is the tale I'm yet to tell. Everything now you hear is truth, nothing more nor less apart. For this tale is of courage and love, and the Dragon with a Boy of a Heart..."

Chapter One: A Boy from nowhere

Once there was a boy whose name was Ben. There was nothing particularly special about Ben, least nothing so special that might bid him to stand out in a crowded room. In fact, some might have said that Ben was subliminally normal. This, of course, was simply not true.

Like most boys and girls his age, Ben attended school regularly. He was a ninth-year student now, a vastly overwhelming station by comparison to his last, though spare

He left the living room, proceeded down the narrow hallway, past the bathroom, and entered his bedroom on the left. He did not bother turning on the lights. Instead, he carefully placed his ruined notebook on his desk, removed his backpack and jacket, and tumbled into bed as the rain softly sputtered against the window and the tall grass outside.

A flash of red light, a thunderous crack of mountain rock, and the roar of a great beast howling into the deep, growing closer and closer...

Knock! Knock! Knock!

Ben opened his eyes to the sound of someone knocking on his bedroom door.

"Dinner." his father's muffled voice said from beyond the door.

Ben took in a deep breath. His dream... It was not unlike the one he'd had earlier. Rather, it was the same one! Only, it was greater, and felt, closer. He shook his head and went to the bathroom to wash his hands and face. He flicked on the light and walked over to the sink. The light flickered on as he turned the handle and waited for the warm water to kick-in. He waited, but sadly the warmth did not

Ben rolled his eyes and proceeded to wash his hands and face in the ice-cold water. It was surprisingly refreshing, despite the cold. He turned off the sink and dried off.

Drip...

All of a sudden, Ben heard a loud dripping noise come from the bath. He spun around with a curious look on his face. He then stepped forward and inspected the bath. It was rather dry, except for a single splash of water near the drain. He bent over and looked up into the bathtub faucet.

"Strange..." Ben murmured as he ran a finger around the edge of the faucet. It wasn't uncommon for such things to leak or spill water freely on occasion, but the projection of such an echoing, boisterous drip?

"Ben!" his father shouted, "Your dinner's getting cold!"

Ben shook his head and stood up, "I must be tied."

He flicked off the bathroom light and closed the door, "Coming!" he replied.

Ben and his Father ate dinner in silence.

Ben toiled his fork over the cold macaroni and half-eaten chicken, "A meal fit for kings..." he thought to himself.

"I'm going out tonight." his father said through a mouth half-full of food.

"Again?" Ben asked

The scene comes on with Ben’s father announcing to his guest that his son will be now presenting the gift which he bought him. Ben is not visible in the scene, but we do hear him. He is calling from inside his house to his father that he really wishes to have a word or so with his father before coming out to the presentation, but each time he asks his father just blows him off with a quick “yeah yeah” or “come on Ben.” At one point he even grants him 10 seconds to speak but never comes around to listen to Ben. As soon as Ben comes into the scene the audio switches. With your eyes closed you would think Darth Vader may have just come on the scene as Ben’s heavy and exaggerated breathing overwhelms your ears. If you continue to only listen to the scene the breathing will continue for around a minute then suddenly is interrupted by a splash. It is at that point where your ears will suggest to you that maybe Darth Vader did not just make a guest experience but in fact our character is in some sort of scuba gear. After the splash we then hear what sounds like repeated surfacing and then diving back under water. The breathing sound is replaced with bubbles and it is safe to assume that Ben is completely underwater at this point.…

Villains and heroes are the fabric of human culture. These sides of good and evil are seen in books, films, and everywhere in-between. For example, an iconic figure in American pop culture is the superhero, Superman.
