Our Lady of Cocharas Under the Baldachin, a figurative 6 x 4 foot painting, is currently on display at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Texas. The painting was created by an unknown artist at the Cuzco School in Peru in the year 1765. The oil painting is a statue painting that is based off of the statue Our Lady of Copacabana, a statue that had gained a wide following on account of miracles ascribed to it. As the Virgin of the Purification, Mary holds a candlestick and bouquet of flowers. As the Holy Child, infant Jesus holds a globus cruciger. Both Mary and Jesus wear gold crowns indicating their status of the Queen and Prince of Heaven. The baldachin, or canopy, is another

    In the nineteenth century, the legal rights of women and men were highly affected by gender and race, both positively and negatively. In the book, “Kingdom of Matthias,” by Paul Johnson and Simon Wilentz, they describe the life of two females, Isabella Van Wagenen and Isabella Matthews Laisdell which whom were affected by slavery and high influences of higher power from men. In the nineteenth century it was believed that males were to support the family by working and earning a wage as a husband was to provide for his wife and a father to provide for his children (Fahs 1/5). Also, during the nineteenth century women were seen to be working in homes and supporting their husbands by cleaning the home, raising the children, and cooking meals (Fahs 1/5). Furthermore, the dominant notion of marriage can be described as a paternal decline for as time progressed many young men realized they could not inherit the farm which coincided with the fact that young women would only inherit a small dowry resulting in a change of how marriage was based on affection instead of parental influence (LEB 222). However, the notion of motherhood had changed overtime with less childbearing as they were planned which allowed more attention to the children allowing them to move to middle-class. The most sought after religious element in the world, the Holy Grail has been subject to numerous sagas since it's origin in Biblical and later Medieval times. Though the Bible doesn't directly refer to the Holy Grail, an oral tradition has been passed down generation to generation. Finally, in the Medieval time period, it was first put into written text in the retelling of the King Arthur legend called Le Conte du Graal, written in the 12th century by the French poet/artist Chretien de Troye. The saga of the grail has since inspired many of the greatest authors in history, and was the the theme for many medieval written works. The legend behind the Holy Grail has been altered throughout the years; however, the base of the story is the same in every version of the story. Christ, along with his disciples ate the Paschal lamb at the Last Supper. After this meal, a grail was passed to Joseph of Arimathea. Following Christ's gory death, Joseph gathered the holy, precious blood of his savior off the cross. When Joseph was imprisoned by the Jewish people, Jesus Christ allegedly appeared to him and gave him the vessel to protect, in which he succeeded in doing for forty-two years. This Holy Grail, is said to contain the fountain of youth, something so powerful that it would be able to give immortality to anyone who drank from it.     At the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska there is an eighteenth century oil painting called Our Lady of Guadalupe, and like many Virgin paintings the artist is unknown. This painting features the iconic Virgin wearing a pink robe with a blue mantel, a crown, bowing her head and praying, and framing her are roses on each side. At the Denver Art Museum in Denver, Colorado is a painting titled Virgin of Guadalupe. Unlike most, this painting has an artist, Sebastián Salcedo. This is an oil on copper painting and it was dated in 1779. The Denver Art Museum provides an official description of the art piece, “Here the Virgin is surrounded by prophets, saints, angels, and seven miniature scenes of her miracles, all identified by inscriptions. At the bottom, Pope Benedict XIV and an Aztec princess (symbolizing Mexico) flank a landscape showing the Virgin’s church north of Mexico City” (para 2). At the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City there is a collections of five artworks by Nicolás Enríquez made in 1773, one of which is a painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe. This painting shows the classic portrait of the Virgin with four miniature scenes in each of the corner. In the top right and bottom right there is a scene of a man admiring the Virgin. In the top left there two men admiring the Virgin, and in the bottom left corner there is a scene of four men holding a fabric with the iconic image of the Virgin on it. In addition to the miniature scenes she is surrounded by clouds, and scattered roses. Lastly, at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco there is an oil painting titled Our Lady of Guadalupe.
