As we got there, the queue was really long, they were even mothers waiting outside while some of them stood. I felt bad because they are pregnant so it can become uncomfortable to wait for so long as you stand. Since it was just my first time there i did not do much, only took the blood pressure for a few patients and that was it.
For most of community service till now I have been at the antenatal section, the work load there is usually a lot and they need the help. So after a week of taking blood pressure of the mothers I was taught how to take their history and also do the HIV testing. So now I do that when I am at the health center. What shocked me is that you would see very young girls come in and its even worse because they have not completed school.
For all the mothers attending the clinic for the first time they are given a talk all related to pregnancy. I sat for the talk and it was very beneficial. It really helped the mothers and was a very interactive session. Through this I have so much more knowledge on pregnancy related

This is time consuming and very difficult because there are many pregnant women that come daily to get checked and only one machine is available.
• Lack of staff and staff strikes – There are not many staff and most of the time staff go on strike due to underpayment. This makes it difficult for the clients as there is no one to serve them due to the staff not being their due to salary issues.
• No ambulances – the centre has to borrow from nearby health facilities in case there is an emergency. 4.3 Opportunity
• Funds – The centre gets a lot of donations and this could improve the facilities and equipment in the centre.
• Expansion – the centre has a lot of free land and this land could be used to increase and provide more services to the clients.
• It can become the best in the maternity department – other government health centres don’t have the necessary equipment for maternity, therefore Westlands health centre should expand a little more with the free space they have and become the best in the maternity services.
• Location – the health centre is located very nearby and therefore it can attract new clients to come and use the facilities provided. Most people that can’t afford can come and use the services as it is free of

The intake process for patients can be very stressful and long especially if the patient is suffering from a chronic illness. When thinking of the check in process, there has to be a way to not only speed up this process and make the patients visit less stressful and more efficient. One way to do this is, at that time a patient schedules an appointment they would be given the option to have someone call them prior to their appointment to pre-register them so when they go to their scheduled appointment all they would have to do is review the information and sign. The other option the patient would have, if they did not want to wait for someone to call them, is they could be given the registration number, and call at their own convenience to pre-register. This way it will be more convenient for them and save time sitting in the waiting room filling out new patient forms. Once a patient is pre-registered and they have reviewed and signed all the necessary paperwork they will then be able to use to the self check in for any following appointments.…

I was able to learn a lot about different diagnosis but I’m glad that I was able to see how well the MD and the LPN’s are able to work together. They work as a great team and try to provide each patient with all the infromation that need. They help each other out and make me want to work in an enviroment like this. This was my first time doing a clinic rotation and I was surprised at how many patients are seen each day and how each staff member plays are huge role in the day! I did not know how much the MD truly depends on the LPN’s and RN. Every action that the MD does effects and is determined by the LPN. I was truly surprise at how big team work is in this enviroment.…

Medicine has changed in the past years in many ways. With the change and inventions of new cures, technology, and less invasive procedures, medicine has become a whole different world. Though there has been many enhancements that increase the productivity and treatment outcomes in medicine, the delivery method and care has changed along with it, and not for always for the best. Hospitals are what people find security and safety from all illness and diseases they have come across, but with the change of the economy and budget cuts, the first thing to cut is patient care and service. When people think of hospitals they think of long lines, waiting for hours for a simple procedure or question, medications that aren’t helpful and no care or relationship with the doctor. Patients get less time with physicians and more time with physician assistants and nurses. Many hospitals and clinics have made it known at the first meeting that after the initial appointment, the remainder of appointments will be either with the nurse practitioner or physician assistant. With less care and relationship from the physician, patients start to wonder why pay high dollar for less service, and that’s where the issue arises.…
