Analysis Of 'U Can T Touch This'
Before proceeding into the heart of the message, I believe that it is necessary to tell you the origin of the title of today’s sermon. In other words, where did the title of this message come from? Well, when I was fifteen years old, in 1990, there was a popular rap song entitled, “U Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer. The album, tape, or CD from which this song was taken sold 10 million copies (“U Can’t Touch,” 2007).

“Hammer,” for short, was one of the most popular and highest selling rappers of all time. Since the pioneers of the 1970s, rappers designed their songs to brag about how great their lyrical skills were and how good their music sounded in the background. So, Hammer, like any other rapper, in this song, “U Can’t Touch This!”

Rap music started off corrupt in the 1970s and is even worse today as the lyrics promote all of the devil’s tools that are mentioned in the Bible. Remember, the Bible says that the devil’s tools to make us sin are the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life (1 John 2:16). Corruption in rap music obviously tells our children to desire all of the riches of this life, which is the LUST OF THE EYES! It tells our children to desire all types of sexual evils and premarital sex, which is the LUST OF THE FLESH! And it even tells them to also engage in the PRIDE OF LIFE, which means to have an INFLATED EGO about anything and to protect one’s street reputation by gunning down other folks that they think are being disrespectful! It really needs to be cleaned up to have a positive influence on our youths instead of constantly tearing up their …show more content…
Otherwise, the corrupt rappers, which I call the street preachers of evil, will take control of their minds and sooner or later, you will lose them to the streets, drugs, violence, sexuality, prison, and eventually the graveyard. It is urgent that you take away these filthy influences in their lives. Screen everything they listen to. Also, as parents, be careful of what you listen to in front of them, because you give certain bad influences your stamp of approval when you listen to corrupt things. When all is said and done, the mocking birds, called your children, will just imitate what you do and it will become difficult or impossible to get them to do as you say and not as you do! If not, you and I will lose

People that do not listen to rap music should realize that rap music carries out positive meanings for society to recognize. People can take rap as too loud or annoying, or people think, “Why do these rap artists have to cuss so much?” Yes, rap music will talk about sex, drugs, and degrading women. I believe that true rap music serves its purpose by sharing life stories and confronting harsh realities. There is a rap song called “Mockingbird” by Eminem, and it is about Eminem telling his daughter that he will always be there for her even though he is thousands of miles away. Critics of “Mockingbird” said the lyrics of the songs were a heart-warming sensation and addresses to a lot of people who are without a member of their family. With Eminem and his success, he is not just famous for the style he presents, but the messages he carries out and the realities there are in life. “Along with the widespread drug use…Many artists simply left these tough issues alone, but Tupac gravitated toward the controversy.”(Seth Campbell, Opinion) Rap music is straightforward, and people should not take that for granted. If there were only more rappers like Eminem and Tupac, and all the new rappers coming into Hollywood would aim as high as those rappers did…the world would be a little bit better of a place. If people focus on the rappers who do nothing but cuss and degrade women, then those are the people that look for nothing but the worst in society. Rap music symbolizes that out of every unfortunate income of life, there is always a message; perhaps a legacy, like Tupac, to be born and presented to a number of generations and generations to come.…

Have you ever listened to or overheard a rap song and thought about how vulgar it was and wonder how something like that ever made it to the public? Well if you think rap music has a negative influence on people, you're not alone. Since the late 1980's rap music has been called the Anti Christ in our culture, because of it's so-called influence in people's life. People swear up and down that the music is why people, especially the youth resort to violent crimes. Rap is defined as a style of popular music consisting of improvised rhymes performed to a rhythmic accompaniment. It didn't really become popular until the early 80's. Over the years it has become mainstream music, everyone is listening to it. In 1989 a local group called N.W.A.(Niggaz Wit Attitudes) came from out of L.A. and changed rap, which was the start of Gangsta Rap.…

Music Lyrics being NON-VIOLENT Rap music can be considered a style of art, and a way for the artists to express feelings through their words on paper. However, there are quite a few rap artists that get criticized for their lyrics. In my essay, I want to discuss why rappers use certain lyrics in their music and why people shouldn’t believe that it causes violence among the younger generations. People shouldn’t censor the music just because of violent, vulgar and abusive messages it promotes to the world. I believe in my own mind, that there is a reason for these types of lyrics that rap artists use and I will simply explain those reasons in this essay. Rap has been called one of the most important music forces to emerge in two decades. It’s pounding beats and staccato rhymes exploded on the streets of the urban America in the early 1980s and since have become the theme music and lyrical heart of the vibrant youth culture called hip-hop ( SIRS 1993). There are many different types of rap artist. There are some that talk about money, some talk about righteousness, and the list goes on and on. Every rap artist had their own way of expressing themselves. There are those that talk about sex, drugs, and violence who receive the negative attention( SIRS 1993). People, think this so- called gangster rap is a bad influence on children in the world and that it promotes violence and that it also is abusive to women. Delores Tucker, head of national congress of black women has been among those pressuring different record companies to stop distributing gangster rap music. There were other significant names that participated in this action. Names like Senate Majority leader Bob dole, and former education Secretary William J. Bennett(Surveys, pg. 1). There are some rap artists that have been openly criticized for their lyrics. Rappers like Lil Kim, Too Short, Snoop Doggy Dogg, and a member from “Too Live Crew,” named Luke Skywalker. These rap artists in the past have been…

As far as I can remember, Hip-Hop music has ruled the industry and continues to till this day. The negative part of rap music that people say sends a negative message is the lyrics. Some songs talk about killing, drugs and gang violence. That’s the part I don’t care for but it sells so, it’ll continue to remain on top. Some music was blamed for shootings and some resulted in death. When it comes to violence, the Tupac and Biggy scandal comes to mind. This was labeled as an East and West coast war between the two. They both talked about killing each others families, having sex with each others wives, which lead to both of them being murdered (Dorian 2010). Tupac had some great songs that hit home for some people. One that hit home for was “Dear Mama”, it talked about him growing up and how his mother made the best for him and his sister with what they had. I love when rappers speak from experience and in ways can influences people positively. A rapper by the name of “Hurricane”, tells his four kids that what they see and hear is just a record or video that was produced (Samuels 1995). I think it’s good for rappers to explain this issue with their kids. It’ll give them a better understanding as they get older. Some of the negatives are when rappers get into trouble for drugs, murders and violations. Some kids look up to them as role models and when they see the trouble they get into they do the same or even worse. A lot of rappers stress to kids to stay in school and get an education. (Samuels 1995). Sometimes music is a way out for some people. A lot of rappers grew up in the hood and were in and out of trouble but used music as strength to get out. I…

Recently music has become an excuse for bad parenting. Parents love to blame musicians like Snoop Dogg and Eminem to bands like system of a down and Limp Bizkit for their child's problems. Before accusing musicians perhaps the family background of the person committing the crime should be looked into. Most criminals come from poor, torn, deprived and dysfunctional families. When my friends and i hears lyrics from Eminem, we do not go out and do what he says. Lyrics from Eminem and other similar lyrics are for entertainment only. If people did whatever they heard, then everybody would…

If a person was born anywhere between the 1980's to the 1990's, he or she is considered a part of the "Hip Hop Generation". Music is a gift that has been given to us, but the question is, "where is hip hop music going?" Hip-hop is now one of the biggest and fastest growing businesses in the world. It's creativity in sound, and its lyrics have impressed and empowered many of today's youth. But is hip-hop music taking today's youths where they need to be? Lyrically, some of hip-hop's most popular songs and musicians have negatively influenced violence, drugs, alcohol, sex, disrespect for authority, and disrespect for woman. For many young children and teenagers, this type of music can create an environment that can become detrimental to their lives and education. Parents teach their children to say no to drugs but the rappers whom children look up to are rapping about using drugs and imply that it's okay to use them. Therefore, children will listen to the side that has the most influential power to them. Many who constantly rewind a song and memorize the lyrics, are equally influenced just as if they were placed directly in front of the violence and sex and observed them. Statistics has proven that many nightclubs that have had violence occur in them have been playing "violent" hip-hop music. Hip-hop is like a strong tornado that constantly sweeps us up and spits us back out. But whom it's sweeping up are the ones who cannot handle the fall once they are thrown back out. Hip-hop will become better once the artists not only think of their pockets but their listeners, who after all, are listening the most!…

Many issues lie cooncering todays music. Parents complane about song lyrics and the message the song sends out to the youngsters of Americas society. Parents try to stop rappers like Eminem, Jay-z, and Ja Rule from curropting the minds of children. They say its gives them (children) ideas about drugs and crimes being that they are seeing there idols on tv rap about it. But on question i ask myself is are the parents right or are the rappers rapping the truth. I believe that it is the parents responsability to look after their children to guide them and to stay on top of what they are doing no matter what. Rappers like Eminem have stated this. In Eminems song "i am" he says "they blame it on Marylin and the heroin, but where were the parents". I belive he is correct in everyway. I belive that the parents are getting upset due to the fact that because they are not doing there job which is raising kids the tv is doing it for them.Other rappers such as the former Tupac Shakur always spoke the harsh truth about life and the future. Because of this parents became alarmed that their children would grow up to deal drugs and perform illegal operations, just because a rapper finally expressed how hard life is. If a parent does not want their children to listen to rap music then they should watch them and take responsibility for them instead of blaming it on someone else. Mabye just mabye when the parents start to do that all the shoot outs in school will stop and the truth wont have to come…

Violence is something you see everywhere around the world. Although rap music has become one of the most popular genres of music, and it seems there is no way to slow down the amount of violence in the songs, teenagers are becoming more violent because of the music, so the artists should rethink their lyrics. Jeanita Richardson, author from “Journal of Negro education” says that “As a result, of the prevalence of violence in music, movies, television and video games, America has nurtured an environment that some have come to call a culture of violence”(Richardson, 2002). In many places, particularly bad neighborhoods, teens are influenced heavily by rap music, and those areas are also known to have much higher crime and violence rates than other neighborhoods. These kids in bad neighborhoods are being raised listening to rap music, which…

Many people assume that the reason why young, African-American teens behave a certain way is because of the music they listen to these days. The music that these urban kids are listening to is primarily Hip Hop which is if you don’t know is a genre of music that is characterized by a performer speaking rhythmically, or rapping, over a backing track that often but not always consists of loops or samples of other music woven together (www.globalpost.com). Hip Hop gets a very bad reputation because of the explicit lyrics that talk about gang violence, sex, drug and alcohol use, and etc. that parents don’t obviously approve of. Even though…

Rap music is synonymous with gangs and criminal activity, furthermore causing a criminal mindset per most people you speak to. For example, N.W.A used their music as a message in relation to the events surrounding their impoverished lives and neighborhood. Being that the police a lot of time were racist, they always were causing them trouble. Their songs invoked crime and violence towards authority, however, looking like gang bangers did nothing to further their case. Unfortunately, it’s assumed that if you are a rapper, you are a thug. Eminem, also a well-known rapper has a song talking with respect to killing his ex-wife and other angry words and bitter speech. The lyrics or words used per cultural historian Robin D.G. Kelley states that,…

Starting at school age, where “studies have associated lower grades with students who listen to rap” (Copley) until adulthood. As a result gangster rap begins to affect future identity development. Many youth use rap music as a stress reliever to find someone that understands the struggles they face in daily life. They view rappers as heroes or some type of luminary. When doing so youth try to find a common link between themselves and the artist who is relaying the music or whatever the song is depicting. Someone who experienced the same issue they are now partaking in and has now succeeded and ‘made it big’. “Music is well-known to connect with adolescents and to influence identity development perhaps more than any other entertainment medium” (Tanner, Wortley and Asbridge). As a result they begin to illustrate and exemplify the things that are portrayed in the music they hear. Thereafter, turning impressionable youth into counterfeit…
