The choice was either go homeless and in debt or risk his life for millions of dollars. “But I have to Monique!” Tyrone hollered, “ we don’t have any money for the bills! It’s the only thing I can do and we can move and start our lives all over again. We can help our families and also move back to puerto rico and live a normal life.” The two finally came to terms but not without a catch. Tyrone agreed to spend quality family time time with Monique, Gabriela and Camilla, and Tyrone had to pay the bail for Monique’s big brother Hector so he may take care of his family if anything went wrong. Unfortunately he couldn’t do any since him and his buddies decided to do the bank robbery first thing Thursday morning and today is tuesday and there is a big shipment of firearms coming into the shipment of New York and they only had baseball bats to use so they needed all hands on deck. Richard Rodriguez is a great example of what it is like to be part of the students who belong to the schooled category. Rodriguez himself is one of the many students that lacked the ability to critically think. Rodriguez read and read books that his teacher once mentioned, but still didn’t feel smart. Being a "scholarship boy" Rodriguez was unable to critically think for himself and was unable to capture and completely understand what he was reading. "I lacked a point of view when I read." (Rodriguez 202) Not only did this make him feel like he wasn’t smart but also made him feel insecure about himself. So insecure that many times, after reading a book, he would look up reviews and comments on what people thought of the book because he believed…

‘Independence or death!’ was proclaimed by Prince Pedro on September 7, 1822 when Brazil's independence was declared. Dom Pedro was an important figure in latin american history because Dom Pedro was the first emperor of Brazil. He was also known as Dom Pedro IV to the portuguese because he was the king of Portugal. When he had fought for Brazil's independence, he proclaimed the quote written above when liberating Brazil from portuguese rule. Actually, this is what he had been known most for; for declaring Brazil independent from Portugal in 1822. He had set up his empire in Brazil before he was ever emperor of Portugal. It wasn't until after his father died (Joao IV) that he had returned to Portugal to claim the crown. When he had left Brazil…

The autobiography “Scholarship Boy” by Richard Rodriguez is the story of overcoming the difficulties of keeping school and home life balanced. A scholarship boy, a boy who comes from a working class family and thrusts himself into the schools environment more than anything else, which is exactly what Richard Rodriguez was and is. The story talks about a young boy from working class family who entered school “barely able to speak English” who takes on school as a method of separating himself from the parents who’s “lack of education” embarrass him, and who “took for granted their enormous lack of education”. Rodriguez talks about how his mother was “a new girl to America [she] had been awarded a high school diploma by teachers to busy or careless…

Not only does this amount of cheating, embarrass the league, it also makes it extremely unfair for players who are not using banned substances. Unfair because it is allowing cheaters to have an edge on the hard working athletes who train and practice to improve their game and unfair that these rule-obeying athletes have to deal with baseball’s new stereotype that the majority of players are taking steroids. After Alex Rodriguez, the latest and perhaps greatest player to admit to using steroids, players like David Ortiz have spoken out about their opinions of the league’s rules. Ortiz suggests that every player should be tested three or four times a year, first offenders receiving a season’s ban and a lifetime ban on the second offense. I completely agree with this idea, as it will really help crack down on the cheaters and help clean the game up. There are hundreds of players breaking the rules and only a few of them are being punished. This leads into the final and most important supporting idea that the rules need to be harsher. With so many players accused of taking banned substances and so little of them punished, it shows that the league feels that cheating is acceptable. President George W. Bush captured it best with his quote “The use of performance-enhancing drugs like steroids in baseball is dangerous. It sends the wrong message that there are shortcuts to accomplishment and that performance is more important than character.” The problem is that this dangerous message is not just being sent to the adult sports fans, it’s being sent to all of the fans. There are millions of children who idolize their favorite baseball players and dream of growing up to play major league baseball. For every all-star player involved in steroid controversy, there’s hundreds of thousands of child fans who may see steroids as a way to make their dreams come true.…

It is a residential area about three blocks from a middle school and a public library. The information you have at this time is that the subject is a 42-year-old male who is holed up in his house with his wife, son, and family friend. He has murdered his next-door neighbor and is threatening to kill those in the house if he does not get his demands. One of his demands is for immunity from the murder charge if he surrenders without harming any of the people in the house. Sue Rodriguez, once a woman who was lively and healthy women much like the rest of us was given the horrible news that she had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in early 1991 changing her life tremendously. Little did she know her fight for equality of life would create a milestone in Canadian Law. Sue Rodriguez fought long and hard to demand the right to assisted suicide, which at the time was illegal under the Criminal Code of Canada, being a punishable act for up to a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. Ms. Rodriguez argued that Section 241 (b) of the Criminal Code (which prohibits assisted suicide) violated her constitutional right to life, liberty and security of the person under S. 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Unfortunately both the British Columbia Supreme Court and the British Columbia Court of Appeal dismissed her application. Sue Rodriguez at her final attempt of trying to grant herself the right to assisted suicide appealed to the Supreme Court of Canada, the verdict resulting in a five to four decision with the Supreme Court of Canada dismissing her appeal. In 1994, Ms. Rodriguez decided to take matters into her own hands, with the help of an anonymous physician Sue Rodriguez ended her life.…

When most people think of Charles Manson, they think “sick, psychotic, serial killer” when in fact that is not entirely true. Sick, yes! Psychotic, yes! Killer, not necessarily! On November 12, 1934, Charles Manson is born in Cincinnati, Ohio. The illegitimate son of a sixteen-year-old girl named Kathlene Maddox. His father, whom he never met, was “Colonel Scott”, from Ashland, Kentucky. His mother was a heavy drinker and ended up in prison for robbery of a grocery store. After the sentencing of his mother, the Courts ordered Manson, a minor at the time, to Gibault School for Boys in Terre Haute, Indiana in 1947. Manson began his juvenile record through escape attempts from Gibault School. Manson’s first known committed crime is robbing a grocery store, in 1948, which he was caught and sent to a juvenile detention center. He escapes the juvenile detention center in 1948 and commits two armed robberies. Apprehended again, Manson is sent to the Indiana School for Boys in Plainfield, Indiana where he spends the next three years. During his stay, Manson escaped eighteen times. Because of his mischievous actions and juvenile history, Manson becomes transferred from one boy school to another several times until ultimately escaping from the School for Boys in 1951 and starting his criminal career. Manson would later be known as one of the most sinister and complicated criminals of all time.…
