Analysis Of The Upper Serangoon Road
The Upper Serangoon Road is a major road connecting the city centre to the north-eastern part of Singapore. Little would have known that the Upper Serangoon Road was once a corridor that was brimming with communal and cultural activities. The current Upper Serangoon Road, once a cauldron of bustling activities, is a far cry from what it used to be in the 1960-1970s. Despite the redevelopment of the area, various buildings that evoke memories of the past still stand tall.

My interviewee is my maternal grandmother, Madam Lim Ai Buoy. She is 92 this year and she was born in文昌县 砊头村 (Wenchang Province) of Hainan Island, China. She has a younger sister and a younger brother, but her sister has already passed away. In order to earn much more money

Such activities build up the “kampong spirit” and a close relationship with each other. Those were the days where villagers could get together and participate in activities such as basketball, playing Chinese Chess, as well as going to the Community Club to watch television programmes. “There are two cinemas that I frequent – 国华戏院 (Kok Wah Cinema) and 星光戏院 (Xing Guang Cinema). The price of the ticket ranges from $0.50 to $1.50 and most of the movies shown are 武侠片 (Martial Arts Film). On every Friday, there would be makeshift food vendors setting up their stalls on the streets, selling dessert, peanuts, kacang puteh. Not only that, there are vendors selling medicinal balm and street performances as well”, as Madam Lim recalled5. For children, they would enjoy a game of kite flying, with its thread made from boiling thread with glass shards. The objective of the game is to cut the thread of other children’s kite. These leisure activities were mostly communal and less individualistic as compared to the activities people does these …show more content…
Madam Lim and my mother were surprised to see the building still standing tall after all these years. The assembly ground still looks the same as it was in the past. Although the building is now replaced by Pertapis Children Home, it still brings back many memories that my mother had. Other places that still stood tall are Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre, Dou Mu Temple, Haji Yusoff Mosque, St. Paul’s Church, to name a few. Indeed, events, buildings, people, can evoke memories of fear, excitement, grief, anger. But for Madam Lim and her daughter, the remaining surviving structures of the Upper Serangoon Road evokes fond memories as well as the many activities that happened along the fifth milestone in the past. It could be said for her fellow villagers of the kampong as

City Road is a busy street in Cardiff. It has a variety of businesses and residents, creating dynamics which change according to the time of day. Many of the businesses are shops, such as Xquisite Africa which caters to the ethnic residents who have felt in the past that their needs were not met. There are also restaurants and takeaways that thrive at night, the majority of customers being local students and young people living in the area. The Making Social Lives DVD shows local resident Lloyd Robson talking to people who have access to City Road and it highlights differences in people's experiences and perceptions. Whilst a street is a relatively small area there are some people who benefit more than others from aspects of the street; it's infrastructure, such as street furniture and facilities, such as restaurants and clubs. There are some people who are actively disadvantaged by these same features and these can become inequalities. I would like to describe how certain people in society experience inequalities in City Road and give examples.…

My grandfather recently passed away 6 months ago. So I have personally witnessed my grandmother go through the grieving process as well as deal with her own sickness. Unfortunately my grandmother will have to enter a nursing home because my mother can no longer tend to her needs. This is a difficult time for my family because my grandmother doesn't want to go into a nursing home, but she requires 24/7 care. For my interview I chose the neighbors mother who’s situation, age and lifestyle are very similar to my grandmother’s. Her name is Lucy and she is 82 yrs. old living with her oldest daughter. Finally, there is a titanic rectangular building that seems simple in shape but complex in other aspects. The black tiled roof, in my opinion, is the most appealing strength of the house as those hundreds of tiles are engraved with delicate patterns, making the tiles bumpy and coarse. Under the roof, there is a tiny nest of swallows which symbolize peace and happiness in China. The morning at my grandparents’ house is welcomed everyday with the harmonic songs that the birds provide.…

Pobreng Pinoy featured here some of the families living in the urban areas who built their houses in dangerous places like in trees, creeks, empty truck containers and old railways using junk materials such as plywoods, styrofoams, and cartons. While in urban areas, they featured some people who eat exotic foods that are present in their community like poisonous root crops, worms, and even farm rats. There were also some people who sell their blood and some of their body parts like eyes, teeth and skin in exchange of money. And lastly, the most shocking and heart melting was the story of a 75 year old man who sell his own flesh for less than fifty pesos to buy his own food.…

This was our second destination, Maasin Watershed which covers 16 barangays in the towns of Maasin, Janiuay and Alimodian. At first, I thought it was not a watershed for I can only see a forest but as we were toured around the place (not the whole place because it’s really wide, you know), I discovered the river at the end of our tour. It felt creepy as I toured the place because there are these birds that create a very unfamiliar sound, yaiks! Anyway, as I entered the forest, I was like in Forks (the setting of twilight) because as you can see in the pictures, it was really like it when I was imagining the setting before as I read the series. Well, my imagination really functioned quickly at that moment. (^-^) By the way, due to my curiosity, I asked our tour guide if they have…
