Analysis Of The Sierra Leone Civil War
I can see many reasons why the author wrote this memoir. First off, he wanted to talk about what he had to go through during the Sierra Leone Civil War. He wanted to show the disturbing sides to what war really does. The rebels of the war did some horrible things in this war. They destroyed many villages in the country. This was including Ishmael’s villages, which caused the death of his entire family. Even the government did horrible things to fight against the rebels. They recruited boys to their army, such as Ishmael and his friends. The army trained them to become killing machines, and they brainwashed the boys into thinking they were doing a good thing killing all the rebels. The loss of innocence was another thing why he wrote this book.

Most young children do not go through life expecting to suffer the loss of their family or deal with the daily torture of rebels. The rebel army killed his family before he could rejoin them. While Ishmael was being checked on by Ester the nurse he said, “I was quiet for a bit, as I didn’t know what to say and also didn’t trust anyone at this point in my life. I had learned to survive and take care of myself. I had done this for most of my short life with no one to trust, and frankly, I liked being alone, since it made surviving easier” (153). He was not used to people caring for him. Once Ishmael lost his family it changed him forever. It made him be more independent and shy when around people he did not know.…

Many of the world’s major conflicts arise from the want or need for resources, but the extent to which these resources are responsible for such conflicts, tends to be misunderstood. Conflicts may arise with first a dispute on who gets control over what resources, but followed by other factors adding up to contribute to the said conflict, including, corrupt leaders, religion, debt ect. When this is the case, it becomes confusing on what aspects are responsible for specific conflicts. Resource conflicts are a common occurrence in many African countries, as Africa is a continent with a surplus of natural resources and minerals, that the rest of the world wants control over. A collection of issues arose in Sierra Leone, thus starting a civil war. After the civil war, which ended in 2002, Sierra Leone has been plagued with malnutrition, poverty and hunger, which further threatened peace and security in the region for many years. In a report by the UNDP Development Index (2007), about 70 percent of Sierra Leone’s population in 2004 was below the poverty line with 52 percent living on less than US$1 per day. 24 percent of the population could not afford minimum daily calorific requirements. In 2008, Sierra Leone was faced with the issue of rising food prices. The price of rice, the main staple food in Sierra Leone had increased by more than 50% on average in the entire country. So it is safe to say that Sierra Leone was faced with the same problem that the neighboring region of Sahel is facing: that of food insecurity. However with the help of comprehensive plans like the Smallholder Commercialization Programme…

The interest fueled human rights violations crimes being committed in The Democratic republic of Congo can be greatly suppressed to an eventual cease if the UN were to intervene more decisively. Considering the UN’s ability to pose sanctions and other methods of coercion, that can greatly impact a countries ability to perform its main functions, why wouldn’t they? The answer requires that we look into the dire situation that exists today in The Democratic republic of Congo. The conflict in Congo can be best expressed in term of domestic and international interest utilizing this quote from Caroline Sourt written in article for The Guardian titled The Congo’s blood metals, she writes “ The precious metals mined in eastern Congo is coltan. It is used in many common products: mobiles, computers, digital cameras, GPS equipment, airbags, hearing aids and even pacemakers. While 80% of the world 's known coltan reserves are in eastern Congo, only about 1% of the metal sold on the open market is Congolese. The reality is that most of Congo 's coltan is sold illegally and the revenue, instead of going towards the country 's development, is helping to fund the ongoing violence.”(2008) the conflict stems from in state actors including governmental and opposing rebel groups fighting for control of these precious metals with the support of various non state actors who stand to benefit economically from this ongoing conflict.…
