The Perks of Being a Wallflower is the symbol of the average teenager and their struggles to be accepted amongst others and amongst themselves. Author Stephen Chbosky exemplifies this teen struggle by depicting an introverted and self-deteriorating character named Charlie explains his experiences by writing a series of journal entries to an anonymous source. He begins to write shortly after the tragic suicide of his best friend Michael and explains that he anticipates his first year of Highschool to be solemn one, and at the beginning it did appear to be that way.
