Analysis Of The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow
Ric Roberts brought Washington Irving and Kathryn Schultz Miller’s story of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow to Saginaw Valley State University’s Malcolm Field Theater the first week of April. When compared to the extreme weather for Saginaw Valley’s production of Terra Nova, the pleasant weather, during the first week of April, brought in enough people to practically fill the seats of the lower portion of Malcolm Field Theater. Going into the theater with very minimal knowledge of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow left quote a bit of room for the actors to depict their character to the reviewer, with this being said, each actor or actress did an amazing job giving their character a personality that the audience can relate to. Not only was the acting …show more content…
Set in 1795, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow takes place on the countryside settlement near Tarry Town in the secluded city of Sleepy Hollow, New York. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow follows Ichabod, the new teacher in the strange town of Sleepy Hollow, immediately turns his nose up to all females located in Sleepy Hollow except for Katrina, the only daughter of a very wealthy local farmer. However, Ichabod quickly learns that he is not the only one who is trying to be with Katrina, another man by the name of Brom Bones is also trying to pursue Katrina. In order to give himself an advantage, Brom begins to devise and set up pranks and scary stories to try keep Ichabod away. The play reaches its climax when Ichabod runs into the Headless Horseman on his way home from a party at the Van Tassel’s. After being struck in the head by the cranium (more commonly viewed as a pumpkin) of the Headless Horseman the reader is left speculating whether Ichabod was murdered by the Headless Horseman or if Ichabod has simply run away from the peculiar town of Sleepy …show more content…
The main actors in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow did a remarkable job showcasing their character and making the reviewer forget that she was watching a play. Joe Green, who played Ichabod Crane, has a very likeable persona and was able to quickly win over the audience making it so that the audience rooted for Katrina to pick Ichabod to be her lover. Donte Green was perhaps the reviewers second favorite actor in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Donte was extremely lively on stage and it is extremely hard for the audience and reviewer not to immediately notice his stage presence upon entering the stage. Donte’s stage presence and nearly perfect acting makes the audience truly believe that Donte is Brom Bones and is also feeling the emotions that Brom is portrayed to be feeling. Because of Donte’s incredible stage presence, even though Brom Bones was the villain of the play the audience was still able to connect with Brom and have positive feelings for Brom. Like Donte, the actor who played the Headless Horseman also has great sage presence. Jonah Conner, the Headless Horseman, had very few lines in the play, however, he was very quickly able to make the crowd feel his presence even when he was not on stage. Rebecca Boes played Katrina Von Tassel and was one of the reviewers least favorite character/actress duo in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. To be completely honest,

This, in company with his ability to ingratiate himself, persuades many of the townspeople to successively lodge him at their homes for a week at a time, which serves as his sole source of shelter. He follows strict morals in the schoolroom, including the proverbial "Spare the rod and spoil the child"; outside the schoolroom, he is shown to have few morals and no motive but his own gratification. Despite being thin, he is capable of eating astonishingly large amounts of food and is constantly seeking to do so. In addition to this, he is excessively superstitious, often to the extent of believing every myth, legend, tall tale, etc. to be literally true. As a result, he is perpetually frightened by anything that reminds him of ghosts or demons.…

Mark Twain despised James Fenimore Cooper and other romantic writers because of the distorted view of life they presented. Cooper’s works such as, The Deerslayer and The Pathfinder, were satirically abused by Mark Twain’s critique, “Fenimore Cooper’s Literary Offences.” Twain analyzes the defects within Cooper’s writing, stating that Cooper violated eighteen out of nineteen rules which govern “literary art in the domain of romantic fiction” (1432). However, in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain ironically violates the same offenses he victimizes Cooper for. “Chapter 17” violates a plethora of these rules, a few being allowing miracles or other events to be reasonable and possible, characters having a meaningful presence, and the avoidance of needless information.…
