Analysis Of The House Of Horrors
The California home David and Louise Turpin held their 13 children captive in, dubbed “The House of Horrors” was filled with torture and cruel taunting by the parents.

David and Louise Turpin shackled their children to furniture with chains so they couldn't escape, slowly starving them to death, and only allowed them to shower twice a year, as previously reported by Dearly.

The children suffered at the hands of their parents for years until their 17-year-old daughter bravely escaped from her home, rescuing herself and her 12 siblings, aged 2 to 29 years old.

NBC News reports Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin painted a horrifying picture of the children's lives, which included being beaten, choked, and locked away in filthy,

The mother and father also enjoyed waving food in front of their malnourished kids faces. They would buy apple and pumpkin pies and tease the children with them, keeping the food in front of them, but refusing to let them eat any.

Their cruelty crossed over into torturing the kids with new toys they would buy for them, but never opening them up to let them play. According to ABC News, Hestrin said:

"The only thing the children were allowed to do in their room or chained up was to write in journals, we now have recovered those journals -- hundreds of them. And we are combing through them."

The District Attorney said the children's health was neglected during their captivity, with the kids rarely seeing a doctor and never being taken to a dentist. He also described their unusual sleeping pattern, typically going to bed between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. "These individuals sleep all day and are up all night."

ABC News reports the children were extremely developmentally behind. Hestrin

Hestrin said the toddler was the only child "who was getting enough to eat."

The youngest child appeared to be so well taken care of that torture charges were not included against the parents since the 2-year-old was not starved, according to KTLA.

According to NBC News, Hestrin described discovering the grisly crimes against the children after the 17-year-old broke free from her home after planning her escape for two years. He said:

“In more than 20 years as a prosecutor in Riverside County, this is one of the most disturbing cases I've seen. We are fully prepared to seek justice in this case and to do so in a way that protects all of these victims from further harm.”

The torture allegedly began while the Turpins lived near Fort Worth, Texas, for 17 years and grew worse when David and Louise moved the family to California in 2010.

The Turpins were charged with 12 counts of torture, seven counts of abuse on a dependent adult, 12 counts of false imprisonment and six counts of child abuse. David received an extra charge of committing a lewd act on a child by force with the alleged victim being one of Turpin's daughters, according to NBC

The article I just read recently, was “Children’s Arrests in Bullying Case Distress Tennessee City” written by Christine Hauser. Hauser writes about how children of the ages of 12 years old were arrested for bullying a boy. There were 10 children involved who were pushing the boy into the street and trying to provoke him into making a move. One of the children was recording the whole incident while the boy was being beaten up and later had posted it on YouTube. After the arrest of the children’s parents and churches started to gather up at the city hall and demand the police officers to drop the charges described as “criminally responsible for the conduct of another”. Zacchaeus and LaVonia Crawford were later on revealed as the mothers…

What really surprised me was the continued neglect of these children. It just seems like such a foreign concept to me to continually neglect children. Now it appears to be an easy concept, if a child is neglected, he/she needs more attention and care. I do realize that this is often hard in situations such as children in the foster care system, so how do we give these children the right amount of attention with limited resources?…

There is always something out there that can hurt them. Families that live in poverty contain high levels of domestic violence (Hamzelou 42). Some neighborhoods can be so bad that even the police cannot protect them and the citizens have to take matters in their own hands. The Sans Fil Neighborhood is so bad that even though the local police are stationed nearby, they have to create their own security team (De Boeck 151). In The Glass Castle the family had to face some serious safety issues, all of which were mainly at fault of the parents but the kids make the best of it. When Jeannette was almost raped by a stranger who just walked into her room they went “Pervert Hunting.” They did almost the exact same thing when there was a snake living in their trailer except they called it “Demon Hunting.” The house in West Virginia was falling apart while they were living inside it and yet the children did what they could to make the place feel like home. They knew how to make the best of every awful thing that came their…
