The main idea for my short story began with a very simplistic and basic colour idea which led to the slow development of two main characters named Red and Blue. The idea flourished from the very basic idea to a slightly more complex one when the idea that Red would be colourless and unidentified in his world. Red was clear and transparent and weakly searching for a colour and was not able to feel complete until he met Blue. With Blue he grew to have slight tinges of colour, and it made him feel strong and powerful. Eventually, Red found a way to maintain the actual colour red, but began to become greedy. Red’s greed begun the beginning of the end, not only for him, but Blue and all other colours in the world they lived in.…

In her autobiography I Came a Stranger Hilda Polacheck reveals the conflicting role of women in the late 19th / early 20th century as workers, caregivers, and social activists in a conflicting age of progress, hardship and missed expectations. Coming from a very traditional Jewish family in Poland it seems that Hilda Polacheck was destined to be a full time mother and wife never having immersed herself in the American society where women were becoming more and more relevant. The death of her father changes all of this forcing herself her mother and her siblings to fight for survival. This fight is what not only transformed Hilda Polacheck into the woman we remember her as today, but into an American as well.…

FOR the most wild, yet most homely narrative, which I am about to pen, I neither expect nor solicit belief. Mad indeed would I be to expect it, in a case where my very senses reject their own evidence. Yet, mad am I not -- and very surely do I not dream. But to-morrow I die, and to-day I would unburden my soul. My immediate purpose is to place before the world, plainly, succinctly, and without comment, a series of mere household events. In their consequences, these events have terrified -- have tortured -- have destroyed me. Yet I will not attempt to expound them. To me, they have presented little but Horror -- to many they will seem less terrible than baroques. Hereafter, perhaps, some intellect may be found which will reduce my phantasm to the common-place -- some intellect more calm, more logical, and far less excitable than my own, which will perceive, in the circumstances I detail with awe, nothing more than an ordinary succession of very natural causes and effects.…

Before reading The Masque of the Red Death, knowing that it is by Edgar Allen Poe the reader can infer that it had the possibility to be depressing and gory. Then, when you read the title, it is confirmed that the theme will be similar to most of his other writings. Although it may not be as disturbing as Poe’s “The Black Cat” where eyes are being gouged out, it still has it’s gruesome moments. The Masque of the Red Death is about a prince and his castle hiding from the red death which kills you within thirty minutes and there is a lot of blood. Since they are in seclusion for so long Prince Prospero decides to throw a party. This party has seven different colored rooms representing the stages of life, including the black room which is death.…

“ The Tell - Tale Heart”,by Edgar Allan Poe, is a murderer story. It is a murderer story because the killer would spy on the old man, he killed the old man, and he already planned the steps out. First, every night, about midnight I turned the latch of his door and opened it gently, pg.145, paragraph 4. On pg.145 it states the killer would move slowly into the room so he wouldn’t disturb his sleep. The killer quotes “ I undid the lantern cautiously - oh, so cautiously - cautiously ( for the hinges creaked ) - I undid it just so much that a single ray fell upon the vulture eye’’ pg. 145. Then, it was the old man’s time! With a loud yell, I threw open the lantern and leaped into the room. In an instant the killer dragged him to the floor,…

Culturally and socially we base our actions and reaction to situations from what’s acceptable. The Stranger By: Albert Camus takes place in French Algeria in the 1940’s. At this point in time, they were recovering from the war which left the government broken and corrupted, not that it was all that good before the war. People like Meursault and Raymond don’t have to worry about authority figures because they see themselves as equals and above the law. This plays towards the idea of corruption, mainly in the sense of law. Since this is how the world is structured for the people in Algeria they don’t have a sense of consequences. Which means it’s hard for them to see what’s right or wrong and in this case to find meaning in anything.…
