In his article “Rethinking Integrity” Stratford Sherman discusses eight steps toward Integrity that Dalman can follow to ensure his actions in this situation are ethical and responsible. Some of the steps can apply in this situation and Dalman will need to make some important decisions. The first step is Doing what we say we will do, or keeping promises (Sherman 2003). This means staying true to the integrity and high standards of Sandwich Blitz and showing leadership by making ethical decisions for the future of the company. Dalman has to consider the employees and the security of their jobs and also economic costs of the new regulations. He will need to discuss the legal issues with his lawyers and possibly try to obtain special considerations from the government to avoid having to move or close the Sandwich Blitz locations. It is possible that the lawyers can get the government to “grandfather” in the existing structures and thus avoid costly moving or closures. This is definitely worth exploring as it could possibly save the company considerable expenditure.
The second step in Sherman’s article that applies in this situation is Doing the Right
Sandwich Blitz’s survival will depend on the management of Dalman and Lei making decisions in this situation to act or not. Failure to act responsibly can have catastrophic consequences for the organization and employees. In the situation where the government employee is proposing an unethical solution to the location manager, Dalman needs to be sure to document that and report the actions of the inspector. That action on the part of the government employee is illegal and considered solicitation of a bribe, thus failure of Dalman to act responsibly would be unethical as well. The responsibility of ethical leadership lies with Dalman to make the right decision in the best interest of the Sandwich Blitz
