John Perkins has an extensive background in the economic field. For many years, Perkins was one of the world’s top economist. In his book entitled, Confessions of an Economic Hitman, Perkins’ describes his vast knowledge of economics by explaining the surreptitious inner workings of the American government. He proposed the idea that corporations essentially control the American government. From this idea, he coined the term “corporatocracy” which refers to an elite group consisting of corporations, banks, and governments (xii-xiii). The “corporatocracy” strives to strengthen the global empire of America (xii-xiii).…

To be sure, it will not be easy for the government to privatize the debt-laden Air India. It will have to work with professionals and investment bankers to find ways and make the deal reasonably attractive for a prospective buyer. It will have to bring down the level of debt in the company. This can possibly be done by selling non-core assets. For example, one of its subsidiaries—the Hotel Corporation of India—runs hotels which can be sold to reduce debt. The government can infuse equity capital one last time to bring down the debt and make it attractive for potential buyers. If the financial institutions are willing, a part of the debt can be converted into equity. The government could also choose to start by selling a minority stake in the…

The Indian two-wheeler (2W) industry recorded sales volumes of 13.4 million units in 2011-12, a growth of 14.0% over the previous year. In a year wherein growth in other automobile segments particularly, passenger vehicle (PV) and medium & heavy commercial vehicle (M&HCV), slowed down to single digits - marred by demand slowdown due to northward movement of inflation, fuel prices and interest rates - the 14% growth recorded by the 2W industry remained steady. However, the momentum in the 2W industry’s volume growth too has been losing steam lately as evident from the relatively lower volume growth of 11.0% recorded in H2, 2011-12 (YoY) against a growth of 17.1% recorded in H1, 2011-12 (YoY). The deceleration in growth is largely attributable to the motorcycles segment which grew at a much lower rate of 7.8% (YoY) in H2, 2011-12 vis-à-vis 16.4% in H1, 2011-12; even as the scooters segment continued to post 20%+ (YoY)…

‘Eyes up, pens down’- and so it begins. The tension is palpable, as a man rhymes pithy sayings and one-liners to numbers. It is a gathering of people at the terrace of Kanchendzonga Shopping Complex, for Tambola (a variant of Bingo). The man on the mic could get away with the vilest of sexist remarks, if my uber-feminist friend gets that one coveted number that would complete her “Top Line”. But it’s not all misogynistic wordplay, in fact, a lot of historically significant dates are also recounted during the course of the game. For instance: “Netaji Budday” is number 26, “Kachera bhayeko saal” is the Agitation of ‘73. The anticipation, the giddiness of screaming “Yes!”, and the sheer thrill of crossing off numbers on a flimsy piece of paper while basking in the crispy winter sun, which could stand you the chance of winning a small fortune; more than compensates for the time and the money you spent. Or so I have made myself believe after my great dry spell of January 2017.…
