What is a triple self-portrait? The reader inquiring about this subject should refer to Charles Rosen's and Henri Zerner's passage, Triple Self-Portrait. Written in 1960, it is a passage about somewhat clever self-portrait painted by a man painting a self-portrait of the reflection of himself , Rockwell, in the mirror. Although this incredibly dull passage is small in size, it is packed with interesting topics somewhat. Interesting, right?…

Another interesting series in the collection is “Daily Photographs” from 1969-70. Blumberg simply photographed newspaper stories, focusing on political, social and commercial events regarding the Vietnam War. Those pictures are shows moving and patriotic moments. The photographer definitely shows in this work that he loves his country. The point of photographing newspapers was to consolidate those important moments, because information on newspapers most times is fleeting moments. People usually read it and the get rid of it, and by taking a photo of it the photographer capture the moment for longer.…

Photorealism originated in the United States in the mid-1960s in the wake of the Vietnam War. It is an international art movement involving the precise reproduction of a photograph in paint or the replicating of real objects in sculpture. The name Photorealism (also known as Hyperrealism or Superrealism) was coined in reference to those artists whose work depended heavily on photographs, which they often projected onto canvas allowing images to be replicated with precision and accuracy. Photorealism complicates the concept of realism by successfully mixing together that which is real with that which is unreal to a degree not previously achieved prior to it. The exactness was often facilitated further by the use of an airbrush, which was originally designed to retouch photographs. Being entirely representational, photorealism art is a natural counter to contemporary abstraction. Therefore, their canvases remain distanced from reality, both literally and figuratively.…

While his timeless photographs are key artifacts in Hollywood history, many people do not know the man responsible for creating one of the most iconic lighting techniques in the world of photography. George Hurrell’s knack for photographing prominent figures in the early 1900’s led their fame to overpower his. This leads many people to seek out his photographs simply because of the stars in the pictures, not because it is his work. Born to an English family of successful shoemakers on June 1, 1904 in Cincinnati Ohio, Hurrell was not expected to become a photographer. He grew up in a Catholic family with four brothers and one sister. Much like his brothers and sisters who also pursued careers in religion, Hurrell initially signed up to become…

Photography has been around for over 150 years. It has evolved and expanded since it’s introduction in 1839 but it still remains to be seen as the perfect medium for documenting reality. Art critic and author Andy Grundberg tried to understand the medium in 1974, stating that “photography was still perceived primarily as an instrument of social reality, able to represent the way things really were in the world.” As technologies changed, so did cameras and photographers were able to produce more realistic images for magazines and newspapers. Because photographs were able to uncover the so-called ‘truth’, when it became known that many historical photographs were fakes and had actually been manipulated to look a certain way, this caused uproar…
