On the other hand, Lengel the manager breaks out of the admiration for the girls and approaches them. “Girls, this is not the beach.” Queenie begins to tell Lengel about her mother asking them to pick up a jar of herring snack and Lengel remains non-remorseful. “That’s all right…. But this is not he beach.” This happens to be one of those conflicts in the story where no one thinks that they are wrong. At this moment Queenie still does not believe that there is a problem with her attire. “We are decent,” at this time John Updike allows the reader to think and put themselves in this particular situation. “Girls, I don’t want to argue with you. After this come in here with your shoulders covered. It is our policy.” How would you feel in this particular situation?

    Although the woman from America and Queenie are both in a high social class, each of them treat less fortunate people with different amounts of respect.     Throughout this play JB Priestly has included a range of female characters in the play, from an upper class snob, through a mature daughter and a working class girl. However Eva Smith, the working class girl, was the only character who suffered the most because of her gender, she was treated differently by all character throughout the play. She had no value in society what so ever and we’ve seen this on many different occasions, firstly when Mr.Birling talks about her and quotes, “We were paying the usual rates and if they didn’t like those rates, they could go work somewhere else”, this quote informs us about Mr.Birling views on working class women, in the quote he is indirectly suggesting that he doesn’t need those women to work for him, ‘they could go work somewhere else”, he is basically implying that those women aren’t important for him, he doesn’t need them, if they don’t like what he does they can go work somewhere else, this also shows the lack of respect he has for those women. His tone of voice also tells us that he still doesn’t care or regret the fact the he sacked Eva from her job for asking for a raise. This is just one example of how lower class women were treated, but to think of it upper class women weren’t treated any better either.…

    In “A&P” by John Updike, Sammy takes a strong interest in the girls in their bathing suits that come into the supermarket he works at. It is clear that he views the girls in a sexual way by the way he describes Queenie from her “white prima donna legs” (1), to the way the straps of her bathing suit “were off her shoulders looped loosely around the cool tops of her arms” (1) causing her suit to slide down a little, how when she “turned so slow it made [his] stomach rub the inside of [his] apron” (2), how cute it was when she lifted “a folded dollar bill out of the hollow at the center of her nubbled pink top” (3) and her friend whom he “liked better from the back” because she had “a really sweet can” (3).
