“Looking for Alibrandi” is a contemporary novel about a 17 year old Catholic girl, Josephine Alibrandi, who was in her final year at school. Her life was turned upside down when her father came into her life for the first time, her close friend committed suicide, family secrets came out and she encountered love. There is one main image in the poem “A Blessing” by James Wright. In the Dominican Republic, Trujillo is a living god to the children and the adults as well. In the Time of the Butterflies, Patria, as a child, accepts Trujillo, but sees God as the only god present. Yet as the novel progresses, similarities between the two are shown, especially with the use of their power. Even though this confuses Patria, a new faith in motherhood forms controlling both of Patria’s faiths.
