Analysis Of Because I Could Not Stop For Death
Emily Dickinson’s Because I could not Stop for Death (1890) simply conveys about death with the dark nuance and gloomy shades. However, this poem cannot establish its death without surpassing the other deaths because death is not simply about the experience to have, but it is also about how death is explored in to representations to pour its tone, feel and emotion. From its early lines, it can be read that there are words of Death (line 1, stanza 1), Carriage (line 3, stanza 1) and Immortality (line 4, stanza 1), these three early main words dribble the assumption for imaginary perception of this dark poem to a gentleman caller taking a leisurely carriage ride with the speaker to her grave. Death refers to someone’s end, Carriage refers to the dead body carried to the cemetery and Immortality refers to the eternal life. …show more content…
After passing this coop contextually, we must put the viewpoint on to this border and as we have to realize, Dickinson rewrote this poem as she has developed from her original Because I could not Stop for Death. The first published version is entitled The Chariot, in the third stanza, she changed the “…where children played, their lessons scarcely done” while in the new version, “where the children strove at Recess – in the ring”. It is just about the change in the level of dictions and lexicons, but when it is scrutinized deeply, it can be found the context which influences this change as we know “children played” indicates that children live as children while “children strove” indicates a critic of how children are massacred by the industrial revolution. This poem's setting mirrors the circumstances by which death approaches, and death appears kind and compassionate. It is through the promise of immortality that fear is removed, and death not only becomes acceptable, but welcomed as well. As human beings, we feel that death never comes at a convenient or opportune time. When Dickinson says, "Because I could not stop for Death," she causes the reader to ask why she could not stop. The obvious answer is that she was so wrapped up in her own life that she did not think about death. She makes it clear that it is inescapable, though, when she says, "He kindly stopped for me." The next lines, "The Carriage held but just Ourselves-/And Immortality," signify that the miracle of life is our most precious possession and promises the gift of unending life. Immortality's presence helps to remove fears as we exit the physical world and provides the recipient with the necessary assistance to assure that the transition from reality to spirituality is a pleasant experience. If the promise of immortality did not exist, one would never go along willingly, nor would one welcome death without fear. Death and the speaker ride along with absolutely no concept of the passage of time. They are not hurried, as they have forever to reach their destination. This is stated in the line "We slowly drove-/He knew no haste." Having completed all her earthly chores, the speaker states that they are no longer of any concern to her. Now there is no sewing, cooking, cleaning, farming, or caring for loved ones. The speaker has been allowed the luxury of rest and relaxation, as the next lines reveal: "And I had put away-/My labor had my leisure too."
