Analysis Of 13th: The Black Lives Matter Movement

“The Black Lives Matter movement is a nationwide chapter-based organization that is committed to validating the lives of African-Americans” (About the Black Lives Matter network, 2016). It is made to be a support system for African Americans that are wrongfully abused and accused of crimes by law enforcement. “The Black Lives Matter movement represents a renewed effort on the part of the African-American community in the United States to counter the violent racism that continues to linger throughout the American society today” (About the Black Lives Matter network, 2016). Although there has been great progress in other aspects of civil rights areas, the organizers of the Black Lives Matter movement emphasize the need to educate all Americans concerning the extrajudicial killings of black Americans by vigilantes and law enforcement authorities across the country. Alicia Garza explains, “Rooted in the experiences of Black people in this country who actively resist our dehumanization, #BlackLivesMatter is a call to action and a response to the virulent anti-Black racism that permeates our society. Of course, they do. There is much more progress needed to be done to be for African Americans to be comfortable with thinking they are being targeted. While said earlier in this paper, the movie 13th shows greatly how African Americans are treated in and out of prison. It showed how brutal police officers were for no reason. For instance, in the movie two African Americans were pulled over because their tail light was out, and the male was shot because of it. The murder of Trayvon Martin was touched upon in the documentary. That Georger Zimmerman thought that he was a threat because he was black and had his hands in his pockets. During the trial, they had found out that he had skittles in his pocket that he was holding onto.
